Has anyone gone so far as to begin a relationship with a firearm friendly defense attorney? I don't mean putting one on retainer but just getting to know them & introducing yourself. Seems to me, those that carry in Md & those of us that have permits from other states would be well advised to at least know of someone to call when needed at a moments notice. Thoughts?

I have a relationship with CCW Safe that costs me about $100 a year. Anyone who carries, or even has a gun at home for self defense, should absolutely have some kind of insurance. Even if you don't get charged, you could be open to a civil suit.
I like CCW Safe's model that's based on police union representation, but there are other options out there. The main reason I went with them is that others have tiers of service. I don't want to have to think about how much legal defense I've purchased. CCW Safe will find and retain local lawyers, experts, etc. to work for you. It's that simple.

My lawyer isn't a 2nd Amendment specialist, but I would trust him if I were to ever get into a sticky situation.

The August 2017 issue of NRA's American Rifleman magazine has a cover advertising a new program called NRA Carry Guard that they are promoting. It seems to be similar to CCW Safe but I have not compared the two programs or the cost. The website to access the new NRA program is NRACarryGuard2017 dot com. I plan on checking it out sometime.

Just to make sure we're on the same page, an Attorney that deals with * Firearms * per se, ie mfg, importing, ATF and NFA issues ?OIr Attorney that deals with the usage of Firearms, as in defensive uses or carry issues ?

    That's not exactly true.
Imho, you want a local, competent, criminal defense attorney, who is highly experienced in firearms laws and defenses.

    Yep, defensive & carry issues.

I'd highly recommend considering other coverage, such as USCCA, Firearms Legal Protection, and Second Call Defense. NRA Carry Guard is a reimbursement program at the same cost point as the others, which provide upfront legal fees. While Carry Guard says it will provide some upfront money, it's completely discretionary. I'm a huge supporter of the NRA, and even a benefactor and Heston member, but their coverage doesn't make sense

USCCA has a roster of attorneys who have passed muster with them--by state. I'm in the process of establishing a speaking relationship with one of them. If/when the time arises that I need to place "that call" I want to be able to say that Barrister Heathcliff is the person I'd prefer they contact on my behalf. If I'm arrested I won't expect to speak to any attorney until the sun comes up.

I think there's something more important than who is your lawyer when you get arrested. That advise is to say NOTHING to the police. I mean nothing. Say very little while they investigate. Once you're read your rights, immediately invoke your right to having an attorney present during any questioning. After that, only speak when you have to use the restroom. Plan for a less than enjoyable time while in custody. But don't think that the police are there to be your friends and just want to talk. ANYTHING you say, can and will be used against you...

Thanks for the advice about NRA Carry Guard.

Do the other vendors you list cover both SD within the home as well as SD when CCW? I do not have a CC permit here in MD, so my immediate concern is the liability I will face if I have to use a firearm for SD within my home. Thanks.
