NICS checks inclue rifles an shotguns, not just handguns.

To get just handgun, someone needs to request the number of 77R's approved from Jan 1 - Jun 30 of 2016.

Yes and in some cases I think there can be multiple handguns on a 77R.

The HQL is only indicative of the number of people, other than those exempt, that are legally allowed to purchase handguns in Maryland. Since once you have an HQL, which is valid for ten years, you can purchase as many handguns as your interest and funds allow, the number is probably only indicative of initial sales post Oct. 1, 2013. It probably closely reflects the minimum number of legally purchased handguns since the law went into effect but the true total would be higher due to multiple purchases on a single HQL.

It is interesting that about 50 people per day decide they want to go through the expense and hassles required to buy a hand gun and the number seems to be trending up.

So year to date 78,432 NICS checks.
Less number of HQL's issued 15,200.
Equals 63,232 shotguns, rifles, and handguns after the first HQL purchase.
This is why no one can give a definitive number of guns owned in the US or even a reasonable breakdown of the types. This is how it should be to prevent the confiscation of the instruments of protection of home and country.

    Number of HQL's Issued

This is a bump and a heads up that since the end of 2016 is fast approaching we need to be on the lookout for someone who gets their HQL issued as close to December 31 as possible so we can see how many were issued this year. If you know of anyone who has recently applied, it normally takes about 30 days to get an HQL, ask them to post the date issued and all but the last two digits to this thread. We want the issue date closest to the end of 2016 to get the best total.

Here is the update we did at the end of June or half way through the year so you can see the explanation.

The HQL's are numbered sequentially starting over each year so to determine the number issued in a year we just need the approximate number of a HQL issued in late December of each year. We can also track trends by looking at the HQL number and date issued to see if the average number per day changes.

2013 The HQL was only in effect for 3 months = 4,500 issued = 50 per day

2014 the number posted was issued in Dec. no date given = 15,150 = 41 per day

2015 the number posted was for end of Dec. after 12/29 = 18,070 = 49.5 per day

    Total for first three years (1st year only 3 months) = 37,720 = 46 per day since Oct.1, 2013

    2016 tracking (issued 3/21 8,1XX) 8,100 HQL's / 81 Days since start of year = 100 per day

    2016 tracking (issued 6/30 15,2XX) 15,200 HQL's / 182 Days since start of year = 83.5 per day

Running total of all HQL's issued since October 1, 2013
    , start of program, to latest date posted (6/30/2016) = 52,920 = 53 per day since Oct. 1, 2013

IMO, it's rather telling that we have to go by the HQL number to find out how many were issued, instead of going to the MSP HQL web page to see the number (like one would in America, where state agencies actually POST ACTUAL STATISTICS to justify their existence).

More of your customer service, Governor Hogan?

Does anyone have a source for how many handguns were sold in MD prior to 2013, per year?

OK the search is on for who has the highest number HQL issued in 2016. The HQL's are issued with numbers that start over each new year so the last issued HQL, or one close to it, lets us know how many were issued during the year. I have been compiling the numbers for the last several years and would like to do so for the end of 2016.

What we need is anyone who gets their HQL at the end of the year to share the number except for the last two digits with me, either post it or by PM, and I will do the rest of the work.

The highest number we have so far was issued on Dec 7 and is #HQL-0257XX. Do you have one issued later? After I get the highest number I can I will re-crunch the numbers and post them.

The current number of active HQLs is between 60-65k. Hope that gives you peace of mind. The current population of Maryland is roughly 6.1 million. This means only about 1.05% of Marylands population holds an active HQL.

Consider yourself a member of an exclusive club. You should feel privileged to possess an HQL. Before the HQL you were just an unlicensed scumbag, now the state has entrusted you with this great responsibility.

I question 6.1M reading 5.7M , but just for ease lets make it 6M. Now take 2M under age (probably low figure) you get to 4, now lets split that and get 2M men (again probably too many, not an even split.) now lets get that to White men , you get 1.2M ? so that gives you a bit more than 5% of white guys over 18 with a HQL. That is still extremely low but perhaps reasonable. It was estimated that 20% of households in Maryland have one firearm or more. People still wonder why FSA2013 sailed through..

    Total for first three years (1st year only 3 months) = 37,720 = 46 per day since Oct.1, 2013

2016 the number posted was for an HQL activated on Dec. 30 = 27,900 = 77 per day

Running total of all HQL's issued since October 1, 2013, start of program, to latest date posted (12/30/2016) = 65,620 = 55 per day since Oct. 1, 2013

Want to see a liberals head explode? Just tell them that in Maryland more than 77 legal Handguns are sold every day of the year. Then you know where to find them, cowering in their safe place.

The numbers are showing a nice upward trend.

If Rep. Hudson's revised National Reciprocity carry bill passes it won't matter. You could carry in MD on a NR permit.

I don't think so. Read it closely. The bill requires a permit that allows you to carry in the State in which you reside. Since MD recognizes no out of state permits, that would not apply to MD residents.
