Another wasted morning setting up for geese.

Overcast morning, ~34° with rain in the forecast. Had all the makings of the 2nd best weather day of the season for us......

    Skunked.

    Come onnnnn moratorium!

I couldn’t go out with my boys today but I’m glad they managed to knock down some buffleheads.

I’m also glad they didn’t sink the boat

There's a whole lot of talk about what this will do to the farms ("spots") in regards to what farmers charge for leases, clubs, etc. We had a such a poor season in field hunts this year, hard to get anyone excited about paying the same rate to barely hunt next year.

We gave up goose hunting a couple of years ago and went to duck and snow geese. If we really want to get some geese we trade with a group that has a field for some duck hunting. They pay 10 grand for their field. We still manage to get some geese in a couple of our spots anyway.

We had a very good outing on Friday on the Lower Potomac...if you like diving ducks. I enjoy hunting them and they actually taste pretty good if you marinate them properly. We took a two-man limit of buffleheads and ruddies on Friday. It was a really fun day with constantly fluctuating weather (fog, wind, clear, calm, wind, repeat). Saturday was super slow and calm. We only got 3. We saw a few blue bills, but none would decoy. Our friends in another blind managed to shoot one passing. We saw lots of geese flying in the area but none would even look at us. We only put out a few goose decoys with the idea that fewer is typically better late season.

I'm optimistic that the cold weather will bring some dabblers down this weekend...what are you guys seeing out there? Anyone on the upper eastern shore or Delaware who can report on snow geese?

What are everyone's theories on how things shaped up this year? How did the warm weather and rain affect things, if at all? What do you think about the decisions to impose stricter limits on mallards and geese next year? I'm personally fine with a lean year or two if it means better hunts in the future.

Major decline in population. Two weekends in a row guys were skunked out on the flats (deepest heritage of waterfowl hunting possibly in the world)

I just read a report about the Canada goose banding, can't remember where I saw it but it was something crazy low, they described it as "Abysmal".

These pictures of old sink boxes on the Cheasspeake Bay popped up in my IG feed. Pretty cool but they were outlawed back in 1918 from i read.

Really cool pictures. I found this, too: https://www.examiner.net/sports/20170318/kenneth-kieser-market-hunting-on-chesapeake-bay

Those sink boxes look like a great way to get really wet and cold really fast! The second gentleman has a really large bore gun. Maybe an 8 or 10 gauge.

8 or 10 gauge? During the market hunt days they had a 12' barrel loaded with ~2lbs worth of lead.

I just hunted with a guy who was overturned in a sneak boat a few years back. He had to be towed to shore laying on the boat upside down and lay there until they came back to get him by shore with dry clothes.

You can definitely die, takes the fun out of it when you get soaked good.

I have been wet (but not sunk or in actual trouble) twice this season. Bodybooting and trying to help unload the boat from the trailer. Happens fast and you can't "go back" (to dry clothing) once it's done...

Yes, I actually had that happen to me. I stepped in a hole in the river and the water level went from waist deep to head deep immediately, and my waders instantly flooded completely. I almost had to ditch them to get back to shore. It was about 35 degrees and raining. This is why I won't waterfowl hunt alone!
