Three 18.5” home defense shot guns walk into a bar...

Seriously though, why for a given barrel length are Remington 870’s only 6+1 while Mossberg and Benelli are 8+1?

In looking at mag tubes that are flush with the 18.5” barrel how do mossberg and Benelli get 33% more rounds in?

I do not have an 870 but I expect it to come down to magazine construction. My Mossberg gained a round when I went with a better spring and trimmed it 1/2" shorter but still within spec. Could be the follower, the mag tube could be dimensionally smaller even though it looks the same.

An 18.5" Mossberg is not 8+1. An 18.5" 590 with a 4.25" tube extension, bringing the tube flush with the barrel, holds 7+1 2-3/4" shells. The 20" 590 holds 8+1.
