If you notice, the mag on the right has the Colt marking on the magazine body and the one on the left does not. Many people make the mistake of thinking that if the floorplate is stamped Colt, it is a Colt mag. This is not true, it only means the floorplate is of Colt mfg. In the service, we disassembled all of our mags and dumped the parts into a barrel partially filled with solvent for cleaning. No attention was paid as to which parts went with which when they were reassembled.

this is interesting about the colt mag side markings

I do see the CH - colt hartford

but I read somewhere the simmonds had the CH on their mags and colt didn't

I will have to dig through my stuff I have a couple of the 20 rounders I accidently brought home from training somewhere at some point in time. We had lots of them In service 6 or so years ago. They were only used for training and most had been spray painted blue at least once in their life for use with sim rounds or blanks.

Yes - the CH / UI solution

simmonds mags had the CH / UI on the mag edge

    universal industries is Simmonds

so it is a UI Simmonds that made it for CH colt using the same logo - neat, CH sideways, UI straight up

Army and late Air Force contract mags made by Simmonds. Dull alloy followers and gold/bronze colored anodizing. (Simmonds was a division of Okay/Universal Industries). Made from 1966-1971.

All Colt-marked magazines were actually made by a sub contracter, Universal Industries, a division of Okay Industries. GI-Contract Colt 20s had alloy followers and are marked with a "UI" stamp (for Universal Industries) on the front narrow wall of the magazine. Tilted on it's side, the "UI" becomes a "CH" (Colt, Hartford). The US Military switched to 30-round magazines in the early 1970s, and Colt-marked 20s made after the switch had black plastic followers. Anodizing is generally gray or silver in color.

I definitely go along with the, "some sort of anodizing process on the aluminum." I don't think brass that thin would be strong enough to work anyway. When I buy painted aluminum sheets at work, sometimes the back side is a gold color. It seems like some kind of oxide layer or something. It's not thick like a paint. If you scratch through it, it's silver inside like aluminum should be. I did the scratch test on one of my mags that was showing the gold/brass color (probably the one that was Stoner's personal prototype that I could have sold and retired early...oh well ). It's silver inside, just like aluminum should be.

What's kind of interesting, in light of what I've learned so far in this thread, of the 20rnders I have handy, the couple with the CH are not showing the gold color. Most of the gray (some kind of phospate maybe?) is gone from the wear points and pretty much everywhere but the valleys. What shows is dull silver. The two I found that are showing the gold color have no markings on the mag body whatsoever. They all have Colt floorplates...but we all know (now) that doesn't mean much.

I always thought that the gray was some kind of a graphite spray. We used to have a graphite spray that we sprayed on weapons back in the day. I didn't do M16 overhaul so I don't know if it was used on them. I do know it was used on M60's, M61A1's, MA2A and miniguns. The color was the same color as the mag after it dried.

From an old memory, don't hold me to facts.
