I picked this up from the Howard County show last weekend. I wasn't sure if the rifle was real or not, but felt pretty good about the scope and mount. But from talks with the experts on GunBoards, this is a true Savage sniper built in the US and shipped to England sans scope. What do you think? (I'm not a photographer...)

Scope side. No 4 Mk 1* and no T mark. Missing the standard Holland & Holland marks seems okay for the Savage models though.

The scope is a No 32 Mk 3.

Scope mounts are X801 and X802. The front of the bolt does not have an S (as H&H ones do) but has two 3's, one upside down and one on it's side.

The scope if pretty clear, with the cross wire not quite level. Sorry about the glare on the bottom part.

'S' mark on the front band. I assume that is the Savage mark.

Marks just rearward of front band. Looks line 'N' '49' 'the crown' and '6C'.

Marks at front of receiver. I believe this is the mark showing the military sold it to civilian use.

Marks just rearward of trigger guard. The squared S for Savage again?

    The S51 stamp.

Rear band. No TR stamp, but again this seems to be okay for the Savage snipers. The England stamp showing it as a pre-68 import.

    Bolt number. Force matched?

The cheek rest was replaced or remounted at some time. You can see the marks of the old one. I don't know if it can be determined if this cheek rest is a replacement made recently or an original model.

You can see the outline of the old cheek rest here also. From what I know about the screws, they look correct.

    So, what do you think?

I love Enfields! I know the snipers are oftentimes faked, but yours looks very nice. Looks to be a good find!

That's would have been my guess. He is a nice, knowledgeable and honest guy who specialized in C&R so I am sure you got a legit piece.

I bought an M1 Carbine from him last year. I think he's more than fair on his prices (and still has haggle room) and seems very honest. He's become a regular stop for me at this show. :)

Enfield snipers are rife for fakes. My best advice is to head over to milsurps.com and their Lee Enfield forum where Warren Wheatfield (wheaty) and Peter Laidlaw, the man who wrote the best reference on the No 4 Sniper, hang out. You'll get confirmation there. Peter also rebuilds scopes for these so if you're interested in getting that expensive scope refreshed he can be contacted there.

I've bought from them no issues. They do sell some mutts which they accurately represent. Always fair on price if you ask for their lowest not what is on the tag. Think I am up to 5 purchases from them

Scope less T. Done by H&H S51 then sent to stores as England caught up in production. Scope an mount belong on rifle C31890, one of the Enfield sites has a running list of owners trying to match parts.

Somebody other then a MOD armourer put the "T" (added the scope/mount) together. No loss at all all the parts are real an the rifle is part of history.

If the Savage "T" had been issued you would have the TR an a "s" on another part of the receiver (not going to list where). Also, the scope ser. would be on the stock wrist.

I have your rifles older an younger sister at 14C2xxx an 15C4xxx. Plus an old Auntie (#4MkI) 0C5xxx.

    Now, go find this book:
    An Armourer's Perspective:
.303 No. 4(T) SNIPER RIFLE and the Holland & Holland Connection by Peter Laidler with Ian Skennerton

Capt. Laidler repairs the No 32 scopes but you have to have them shipped through Brain Dick at bdlltd.com

Capt. Laidler post here time to time:
http://www.milsurps.com/ drop down to the Enfield site.

    Nice find!

Thanks guys. I did post this up on Milsurps at your suggestion and heard from Peter Laidler. He has questioned a part on the bolt head that he says shouldn't be there. In my fourth pic, just above the notch in the guide rail, there is a small horizontal piece that goes from the bolt head, on the extractor, to the rear of the bolt head, and is about 3/8's of an inch long. It can be shifted a little.

You mean the broken extractor spring? A $5 part that needs to be replaced. Takes an old MOD gun plumber to notice it from a photo. easy fix, spring an dental floss to pull it into place. Or the $100 tool.

Ah, most excellent! I looked on my other T and it is certainly different looking. Thanks for the knowledge and You Tube link.
