I first learned how to shoot a rifle in the Boy Scouts using a single shot 22LR with dovetail sights. These days, seems like a lot of folks learned to shoot on a scoped or red dot type of optic. What was your experience?

    No frills irons for me

    Tried and true

I've shot a few scoped rifles and a couple high tech turret mounted big guns with night sights and thermals too, which are all fun. But nothing really compares to that experience of hitting the target with irons

Had to vote "Iron" because it was listed. Are iron sights considered optics? My first piece of glass was a 4x fixed Tasco scope mounted on a 20 ga. Mossberg pump(my first deer gun).

I admit this is my mentality

I tried red dots, found I had an astigmatism, and then suddenly decided that I am better than red dots.

Irons, but I wasn't any good. The first people who really taught me how to use them were the Appleseed instructors so Tech Sights on a 10/22.

I learned on irons. Specifically peep sights. I did an NRA basic rifle course and then shot 50 foot small bore.

You got me there; strictly speaking an optic is a lens of some sort. Could have said type of rifle sight I suppose.

Maybe ask the mods. to change "Optics" to "Sights"?

I learned on iron sights, but will be teaching my children how to shoot with red dots first. For me, reinforcing good shooting fundamentals and firearms safety is more important than learning irons. Once they learn to shoot on a single focal plane I'll teach them to shoot using three.
