A few years ago my parents went to Alaska, and brought me back a Ulu knife. It’s one of those tourists types, but it works really good in the kitchen. It’s the most used knife in our kitchen.

Anyways, I thought about making my own Ulu. I would use the one I had, as a template, to make my own blade.
For about the last week I’ve been going out to the shop and playing around for a few minutes every evening. Since I don’t have a way to temper steel, I used a hammer and chisel, to cut out my blade, from an old hand saw I had laying around. I used files you get my final shape, and set my bevels. I had a piece of oak board in the shop, that I used to make the handle. Used my soft and hard Arkansas stones, and finished polishing my edge on a old barbers hone.
This thing is sharp! Used it in the kitchen the last few days, and I really like using it.
It was a fun little project, and my wife is already asking me to make a few more.

Here’s a few pictures of it during its making.

I have one but have never tried to really use it. What are you using it for?

Due to its design i want to press which isn’t how a knife is used lol

Right now, I’m using it in the kitchen. So far it has only cut meat and veggies. Once deer season comes back in, I’ll use it then and see how it works. I don’t think I’ll use it to field dress, but cutting up the meat to put in the freezer, I think it will work perfectly.

The commercial one I have is only beveled on one side, I put one on each side, so it’s more like a regular knife. Some people prefer the bevel only on one side, others don’t. Looks like there’s no wrong way to make them, but they say the traditionally they were beveled on one side only.

Yes, there is definitely a learning curve, working with these things. The 1st time I used one I didn’t like it, but I keep using it, and now this has been my go to knife style.

    Good job! Neat project.

Thanks. It was a fun project.
I’ll post a picture of some of my knifes, I use. I’m definitely into the more rustic looking knifes, than most members on here. So the way this Ulu looks, is just the way I like them to look. It has the “been there, done that” look.
I do a lot of hunting and fishing, and I’m a big fan of carbon steel hand forged “trade knives”.

Looks nice! Give it a chance, I’m glad I did.
Nice to see other people carry a Opinel. The one in the pic, is a #8, I usual carry a #6, but I lost it somewhere. Guess I’ll have to order another one.

We have a Ulu in the kitchen drawer, outlaws brought it back from one of their Alaskan cruises. Never have used it. It's a strange knife but I can see some utility in it.

The first one of the blonde lady skimming the squirrel was horrible. I can skin and gut a squirrel in 30 seconds and i live in suburban MoCo. She’s “in the bush” hacking away at this critter.

Agreed! She made a mess of that thing, and took forever. Not so sure it’s the knifes fault, she’s just doesn’t know what she’s doing.
However I did watch a video of her husband making the knife she was using. He had a lot of good info, but the way he breaks those old saw blades, is way to dangerous for me.
