Well my brand new Benjamin Discovery just arrived (ref: http://www.mdshooters.com/showthread.php?t=159872) and already I love this air rifle. For now I got the hand pump, although maybe down the road I might get a tank set-up. But really I didn't find the pump action too bad; in only 85 full pumps I went from 0 to over 2000 psi. (It went just into the yellow.) I already have 10 rounds downrange, and I'm headed home right now to put a bunch more through before it gets dark.

So here's my question for you Disco owners: What modifications have you made, and why? Did you like your mods, or if you had to do it over again are there any you would avoid?

Out of the box this thing already shoots well, and I like it a lot. I have no doubt that for me I made the right choice. But if there are a few easy and good improvements, I'd consider those as well.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The only modification that I kept to my Disco was to install a double tube for double the number of shots. I had installed a stronger spring but found it used too much air for little return in power. Rather than 14.5 gr pellets I shoot 18.1 gr pellets. I chose not to mess with the trigger because it's fine for me, as is. Lastly, the Benjamin pump I had crapped out after 3 months; I reinvested in a Hill pump and religiously pump 50 strokes and let it cool for 10 minutes before pumping more and use silicone divers grease on the pump shaft for each daily session of shooting. I've had mine for three years now and it is as strong now as it was when new. Also, I only fill to 1800 lbs and don't go below 1000 lbs. The sweet spot begins at around 1750 and continues through to about 1150 on my rifle. Sweet spot is where the pellet's POI matches the rifles POA, consistently. Mine is .22cal and puts a hurtin' on squirrel whether head shot or lung shot. The scope I use is a UTG 3-12x44, 30mm tube.

TKO ldc - Makes it way quieter
Disco-r-us extended bolt probe - More power without drop in shot count
Disco-r-us power adjuster - makes power adjustments easy
Second barrel band - Increased accuracy at longer distances
Barrel band set screw mod - Increased accuracy
Jsb 18.1 pellets - most accurate pellets in my disco

Thanks these are really helpful. But I do have a couple of questions:

The second barrel band mod - is that simply adding a second Crosman standard barrel band, or is there an aftermarket band that is added on?

And also - do you need to do that mod if you do the set screw mod, or can/should both be done together?

    Thanks again!

It's nothing more than adding a second factory Crosman barrel band. Some people go with a single band with the set screw mod with success and i even did so at first but there's no doubt adding that second band makes the gun even better. The biggest benefit was when hunting in the thick woods if I accidentally caught a branch with my barrel I didn't have to worry that my poi was knocked off. You'll find that after adding the TKO you'll be accidentally bumping the gun barrel until you get use to the added length.

I added most of the mods to the one I have for sale in the classifieds. When I added the second barrel band, I tuned it to where the barrel shot best and secured it there. The TKO LDC is a must. I have the seven inch version and it keeps it very quiet. I also put Weaver rail mounts to allow me to remove the scope and use the sights if I wanted. When I replaced the scope, it would still shoot to POA.

When you buy your TKO, have him mod the fill valve cover so it can be used with the LDC. If you don't, the cover won't fit.

If you plan to keep your Disco, it would be worth while to buy a Marauder trigger group. This trigger will make the gun your go to rifle forever.

The Marauder is a nice rifle but weighs a ton.

Mine also loves JSB 18.1 pellets but shoots the cheap Wally World Crosmans almost as good. Check out the group I shot off my elbows resting on my car trunk it is on my classifieds add. The target also has a list of the mods I did to the rifle.

    Regards,

    John

With respect to the second barrel band, I have a question:

How tight do you clamp down on the grub screws? It seems that you need the right tension there. Too tight or too loose - it seems to me that you can either spread your barrel apart or conversely squeeze it downward toward the air tube. Either way, if wrong your barrel will no longer be straight.

Comments from those of you who have done this before?

    Thanks.

After I found the best place for the second band, I coated the screws with blue locktite and snugged them down. A PCP does not have the recoil and vibration like a springer so you don't have to crank them down like springer scope mounts.

I used feeler gauges and started at the breech end of the barrel. Once I found the correct combo of feeler gauges the fit between the barrel and air tube I continued down the barrel and checked the gap every few inches and used my barrel band screws to adjust the barrel/air tube alignment. I also feel this is why the 6 screw mod is important for the barrel bands as it allows you to make those adjustments and still secure the barrel because tightening the screws no longer pinch the barrel and air tube together.

You can visit the TKO website and find a how to on the mod.
