Eh, just get one of these and be done with it.

I get what your saying about the union now, for some reason I was thinking a standard slip coupling. Is a union rated the same as straight PVC for pressure? I would worry it would leak like a sieve at pressure. I feel as though a ball valve will do approximately the same thing with the seal involved, although I have never heard of using a union as a safety pressure release for a potato cannon. I know you can get brass release valves for reasonable prices that would be smaller than a union.
I'm a comp sci, so you got me outguned when it comes to fluid dynamics. I'm sure there are plenty of youtube videos and plans that will show if a 1.5 ball valve has a big enough hole to avoid a slow release.

I only go surf fishing once a year at obx. After a few years of upsizing upgrades I standardized on 3 12ft ugly sticks with 3 Shimano Socorro 10000. I think the low end shimanos are pretty good bang for the buck, and you can buy spare parts on their website. I bought extra spools that I filled with straight 20lb mono as back ups and filled the primaries up with 40lb power pro super slick from one of the big spools. This summer will be the 5 year with this setup. I think the key to keeping everything working is to hose everything off with freshwater every day and completely disassemble, clean and regrease right after getting home. I let one of my earlier reels sit for a month on my work bench and the salt ate the insides.

I miss the fishing tournaments at OBX. I fished with many good people down there.

What do you use for rigging/bait ?

I usually have 2 rods out with bottom rigs and cut bait, either fresh caught or frozen. Sometimes frozen squid, frozen shrimp or sand fleas. Buy frozen bait at the human food store and avoid the markup at the bait shop. I try to mix up the rigging between the rods, like one premade tackle shop jig with hooks, the other homemade with a single hook on a slider with a float. 3-7ft 100lb mono leader on everything. I usually catch a lot of spot and pompano on these. I keep a spot or two to replenish the bait cooler. Occasionally a shark or ray will take off with these baits too. Rays are crazy to reel in, they just apply constant force for a long time, you really need a fighting belt.

The third rod I will use with lures, got-cha jigs, spoons , crank bait and top waters. I normally catch the same fish as above on these, but also sometimes mackerel and ribbon fish.

If i see anything going on like a bait fish jumping I will start casting in that area with whatever rod is closest to me. Same thing when I am out on the beach with the family, i will have one rod near me with a lure in case I see a bluefish feeding frenzy.

If interested, there is a seafood/ice place behind wawa, after crossing the bridge over choptank river. They sell 10lb or 50lb of cut bait for cheap price. I think it’s locally caught. They can be out sometimes also. But better than buying 3 fish for bait for 8-10 dollars.

My brother took me there couple weeks ago. Just a FYI

Glad I found this thread, I just built a bait cannon, I'll post pics when I get a chance. I tried just a regular PVC ball valve and bubba'd a handle on it to get more leverage, PVC just snapped. I found this valve on Amazon, and it is super smooth and easy to dump.

Also am using a Dewalt 20v inflator do fill it, just dial in the psi you want and wait for it to fill. Haven't got to fire it with the new valve but the best I had with the first one was 110 yards according to my range finder, valve only opened slightly.

The weather is warm now so get out and open that valve and let's see what she's got. :D

Make sure the rod is securely tied down before testing. :innocent0

All glued using "Heavy duty" cement. Would like to note to anyone thinking about building one, please make sure all fittings and pipe are rated for pressure. I used the home depot app and scanned the barcodes in store to check the specs on all the fittings.

I cut a piece of 2" pipe (same diameter as the barrel) to 12"s long with a cap. Add a weight attached to a leader and hook and bait, leave one end of the leader out of the mold and freeze. Haven't tried this yet but that's the plan, I made 6 of these molds. Was also thinking about how to make an unfrozen bait bullet since freezing takes forethought and planning. I'll post a pic.
