I am mounting a Nightforce base to new model 70. I have always used the short screw in the last base hole in past mounting. With this rifle I need to use the shorter of the 4 screws in the second to last hole or the bolt won't close. Is this normal? Will the longer screw interfere with the cartridge?

I had the same issue, had to cut the screw, or it protruded into the locking lug recess and prevented the bolt from closing.

Sometimes you have to cut the front one as well, as it can bottom out on the barrel thread, and won't tighten all the way.

I usually epoxy bed the bases on the M70, due to machining differences.
