So i am buying a 338 lapua RPR. I am looking to buy a scope for it to start out with. I am looking to spend about $1,000.00 on a scope and mounts. So what would you buy?

Vortex Viper PST Gen-II 5-25x50 $900 with Vortex Tactical (Low Profile) Riflescope Rings $38 Vortex Flip up Dust covers $20ea.

That adds up to $998 and it will be a scope you can use elsewhere in a few years should you out grow it.

    Good luck!

I doubt low rings will work. I have to run high rings on my 5-25. The RPR has a continuous rail. Rings need to be high enough to get the objective bell to clear the rail.

i just bought an ever so slightly used vortex 4.5-27x56 razor hd2 for $1500 on snipershide. being that they're coming out with newer models, these are being discounted, now around $1800 new from well over $2k. you're not going to find nicer glass especially for the money and since you bought a caliber that can really reach out and touch someone, i think you owe it to yourself to get some worthy glass for it. i got a badger 34mm 20moa mount for under $200. i know that's way over your budget but maybe buy once cry once. this scope replaced my long time favorite nightforce 5.5-22x56 (non zero stop) which i'm getting ready to list for $1050 shipped if you're interested. i've shot a handful of PRS matches a year with it, also very nice glass/reticle just wanted to go first focal plane.

I think the PST Gen II is the way to go for the value. I like that it's offered in FFP as well but it might be more pricey in that configuration. The only other thing I can think of is if you can find a sale on a Burris XTR-II.

    Vortex Viper PST gen 1

This is my RPR, gen 1 in .308 with a Vortex Viper PST gen 1, 6-24x50 FFP MOA. The pics were taken last October in southern Virginia while shooting out to 1000 yards with Dan Newberry at bangsteel. I paid $649 for the scope. It’s plenty of scope. You may be able to still find the gen 1 PST out there for well under $1000. Check Euro Optic, they seem to still be able to get the gen 1 PST’s from time to time.

The tiny white dot in the second pic is the 1000 yard target.

I have 6-24 vortex PST, and a razor hd2 world of difference in glass. If you are stuck on the budget the gen 2 PST is fine

I have that exact same setup with the MRAD version of that scope. Might be my favorite gun I own.

Ths is my same setup and I absolutely love it. Bought it to do just what you’re doing in these pics, just haven’t been able to stretch it out like that just yet. Hopefully taking long range class this spring/summer. Good to know this rig works like that, this is why I went with it. Thanks for the confirmation.

Edit: actually mine is MRAD, not MOA.

SWFA SS are get fixed power scopes for a good price.

I shot Bang Steel with a buddy who rented the rifle from Dan. It had a 10x SWFA SS and he easily made hits at 1040 yards.

Another vote for the Sightron SIII long range line. Reticle and turret is up to you. The 8-32x56 is good but getting large. I went with a 6-24x50 for my latest build as it's potentially a hunting rig and I didn't want the hubble telescope strapped on top. 50mm front objective also allows it to be mounted low enough to get a cheek weld. The Sightron's also have very good amounts of adjustment (100 MOA if IIRC). Some scopes have as little as 40 to 50 MOA.

There's a guy on EBAY selling them right now lower than everybody else. I've bought a couple that way. Got the 6-24x50 for $600 NIB.
