So, I'm finally going to do a order with the CMP.
I got my membership with GCA.
    Got money.
    Need to print order form.
Need to make copies of Birth certificate.
    I'm a veteran

Need to choose which M1, of what is available.
The special .308 is curious. But, currently a FG 30.06 is more likely.

    Any input?

IIRC, you still need some sort of shooting participation signed by an RSO.

Except for us older guys....last paragraph.

MARKSMANSHIP OR OTHER FIREARMS RELATED ACTIVITY:
You must provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe handling of firearms and range procedures. Your marksmanship related activity does not have to be with highpower rifles; it can be with smallbore rifles, pistols, air guns or shotguns. Proof of marksmanship participation can be provided by documenting any of the following:

    Current or past military service.
Current or past law enforcement service
Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin).
Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor). Visit https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=match&task=search to find an upcoming CMP sanctioned clinic or match.
    Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status.
    Concealed Carry License.
Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training. - FFL or C&R license.
Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training.
Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing shooting activity. Complete the CMP Marksmanship Form to certify your range firing and the required marksmanship related activity for an individual to purchase from the CMP.

No proof of marksmanship required if over age 60. Proof of club membership and citizenship required for all ages. NOTE: Proof of marksmanship activity is not required for purchase of ammunition, parts, publications or memorabilia.

No problems just follow the instructions the whole process looks more complicated than it is and after you have been through it once you will kick yourself for not doing it sooner. As far as choice it all depends on what you are interested in but many people seem to feel the service grades are worth the extra money. It looks like there currently is a big difference is how fast they will ship so that may factor into your choice but the wait times are much less than they once were. CMP Garands are like potato chips you will want more than one.

My hunter-safety card (or my HQL, submitted both) provided my proof of marksmanship for anyone else interested in the CMP.

That’s what I used also a couple years ago with no problem!
Also I haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but the forms will need to be notarized and most banks can do that for you.

Also I would get the service grade as the field grade will probably have the Hackberry wood stock and they have gotten bad reviews. Whatever you order try putting a “sticky note” on your order form with any preferences you would like. It’s a 50/50 shot that they would honor it as they would be picking your rifle from a rack that could have multiple rifles so say you want USGI wood you just might get it if there is one on the rack.

Based on what they are sending out these days I would not mail order a FG Garand on a bet.

Racer Doug14, good luck on what the CMP sends you. Most folks are thrilled when their package arrives.

Gathering all the docs you need is important and well worth the time. Don't forget to have page 2A on the order form notarized. ;)

4570inMD and I will be heading out soon to Anniston to attend next weekend's AMC: http://thecmp.org/training-tech/advanced-maintenance-class/ We've been looking forward to the trip since last January. Building our own CMP Specials and bringing them back with us will be something special. :)

Here's a pic of what a CMP service grade looked like when it arrived back in 2011...

One more vote for the service grade. I asked for a "nice shooter, range gun" and I'm thrilled with mine.
