Is a nitrided barrel better than a stainless?

Nitriding hardens the surface. You can have a nitrided stainless barrel and it will extend its life.

Nitriding wont improve a crappy barrel, but it will make a good barrel last longer.

I cant say with 100 percent certainty. The cases I have seen appear to be either corrosion from the process, OR the Barrel Extensions just coming loose which may be a result of the process when the items are assembked then treated.

This applies to Bolt Action Rifles that are nitrided with the Barrel Installed.

Interesting. The Nitriding process involves some pretty serious heat, right? I wonder if the barrel extension and the barrel expand and contract at different enough rates that they can start to work loose or something.

Of course, barrels get pretty damn hot with sustained fire, too...

Nitriding is done by exposing the part to hot ammonia gases.

Heat and a corrosive' A combo NOT good for things made of parts rather than a single piece of steel.
