This really isn't connect to current affairs - it was on my radar some time ago, though I will concede that the current crisis may have ramped up the schedule.

There was request to have one here years ago and I fought it tooth and nail because there were frankly too many people who were into the black helicopters and jack-booted thug mentality who were jerking off at the thought of something happening.

I think we've matured, at least in that regard, and it's time to put it in.

Haven’t determined if we’ve matured or society has regressed, either way a good forum to have. Could help some folks by providing some common sense prepping strategies rather than simply buying 100 rolls of TP.

Woohoo! A prepped forum, my new online home...

Don't monopolize it. Norton said we could all use it.

Question, and I'm throwing this out to everyone. I read somewhere online recently that you're supposed to throw away the water you boil or soak your dry beans in because if you don't it negates all the nutrients or something like that.
Has anyone heard of this or is it just some nonsense being spouted off by a ' know it all' ?

    My contribution:

    - Shelf stable foods- heat and or water or less.
    - Additional refill on all prescriptions for the family- can purchase at low cost even if insurance won’t agree.
    - Water storage and consumption plan- 1gal/day/person in the family- hope we don’t need this as it’s a sign SHTF if we did.
    - Simple Bleach and water solution make a fine anti-bacterial/viral cleaner.
    - Firearms- you can only shoot 2 at a time per person at most (ha ha), ammo would be more critical, but hopefully anyone here is already well stocked in that respect. Even .40 has value in the apocalypse.
    - If you have a baby hopefully you’ve got 1+ month supply of diapers (I do!).

The first time my mother in law saw my toilet paper stash she laughed at me like I was nuts. I have not bought toilet paper in four years and I still have a lot left. She also couldn't comprehend why I own and carry guns.

She was born and raised in Venezuela and recently saw that the people couldn't fight the oppressive government there. This week she couldn't buy TP. Now she gets it. Though I don't expect her to buy a gun, I would expect her preps to better.

Great sub-forum! I started semi-prepping a couple of years ago (8 years ago if you include ammo). A little bit at a time over a long period of time makes a difference. I have learned a lot over the past few years by reading books and researching online. Growing, canning/dehydrating/storing your own food became a hobby of mine. I am happy to have the equipment that I purchased over the years to keep food for long term storage. My wife used to laugh at me for my supply of waterbricks, foodbricks, buckets of dehydrated food, ordinary supplies in bulk... the list goes on. Over the past couple of weeks, she has changed her tune. I consider this virus to be a dry run for people that are not self-sufficient to any degree. Everyone can always be MORE prepared but at least a portion of us are not at the very bottom of the food chain. I agree with Muleskinner towards the beginning of this thread. I am more afraid of people that have nothing and are desperate instead of the virus.

Funny over the last year or two I have been getting deals on those 25 year foods as well as getting that book called The Lost Ways. Not a prepper per se but luckily, was recently piggie 2020 day

My understanding is, the reason for pre-soaking beans then discarding that water for fresh, is to remove some of the complex carbohydrates in them. These are the compounds that cause the most ,but NOT all, problems with people having trouble digesting them (i.e. gas, bloating et cetera ).

Im really only caring about one prescription medication. Little concerned about lack of American production thereof. Im renewing that best I can. One thing you can't horde, so make sure its there.
Btw, China is already using this as a stick.

Something I've done for an occasional patient on certain meds is to write it for twice a day if it's actually once a day etc to allow for a stock up. There's obvious concerns about doing this but the purpose is precisely for times like this. Ask your provider if you're comfortable doing it.

I've been prepping for a few years, kicking it up after Superstorm Sandy. Car has a get home bag, I have multiple first aid kits aside from my very extensive primary, food, all the items needed for a month or so after a major disaster. Makes one feel very reassured during times like this.

I took this event as a good chance to come clean with my wife and share my previous prep actions.

We don’t have unlimited financial resources so when I was saying no to things she feels were important and then buying guns, ammo, prep supplies and building up some emergency cash reserves. I really felt a bit guilty about that. I don’t like hiding things from her but it’s been hard to explain some previous expenditures without seeming a bit silly, so I just did so secretly.

I hope that going forward we can work together on preparation plans because that would be a more effective way to do it.

Dude, we are twinsies...I think you're right. This is an ideal time to come clean and get her on board. Good advice.

Anybody know anything about steam power?

I've wondered if it is possible to make a steam powered generator. Burn firewood for electricity.

Did a couple searches, mostly inconclusive. I guess there are issues regulating your boiler so it doesn't explode.

This is the same story on my end at various times during our marriage. I have no secrets stashes of anything anymore here. Coming clean and being on the same page with your significant other feels pretty good, eh?

I have several "secret stashes" of just about everything ... only because I informed The Wife and she didn't really care at the time of purchase and promptly forgot. Recently, she has been amazed at how quickly I have taken care of some of her emergency prep suggestions.

Here is a good place to learn about Steam Power:
    https://roughandtumble.org/

There is a historic steam powered generator in the stationary steam building:

They even teach a Steam School (I am certain the class is full, signup for next year will be at the Time Of Harvest show in October and typically fills in less than an hour):

hehehe.... I have to admit, I have taken that angle on a couple of occasions too. Some things just appeared out of thin air. Like magic.

One thing to consider for you GAS generator owners. Gas doesnt store well. You get get tried fuel conversions that are affordable, that allow you to run gas, propane, or nat gas. I am unlucky enough NOT to have gas heat. But propane bottles give me a second option.
