I will soon be setting myself up reloading 308 win and would like a recommendation for a powder to start with. I currently reload only pistol carts, and stock 800X and unique. A quick look at the reloading data at hodgden suggests neither of those powders is likely to suit my needs.

    Varget.

I've seen many 308's shoot quite well with Varget and 168gr SMK's.

H4895 or IMR 4895 are the traditional go to powders for the 308.
N140 is excellent but more expensive.
IMR 4064 works well with 175gr bullets.
VARGET is typically the powder of choice for PALMA.

With a rifle I'd never shot before. 5 rounds, 168gr SMK, don't know the charge or COL, but it was Varget he was using. 2nd string was tighter, but I don't have that pic anymore.

20" Rem 700 SPS (factory barrel), XLR Carbon chassis, Timney trigger, and a 5-25x50 Burris XTR II FFP.

I've had good luck with 43.5gr varget with the 175 smk. I don't have fancy pics like Brad lol

Saved the pics because I told Josh if he dicked with that recipe there was going to be significant bodily injury visited upon him.

His string, made my 1st string look like Michael J Fox was behind the rifle.

That's what got me looking into swapping the Savage 10 from a .223 (at that time) into a .260Rem.

Varget isn’t as temperature sensitive as some of the traditional ball powders, but is sometimes harder to get in stock.

Also ball powders like IMR4895 meter better in most powder throwers.

I tend to stock up on Varget when I can and throw light and trickle up, so the disadvantaged to Varget aren’t a big deal for me.

Varget also works excellent for .233 and .30/‘06

    I thought Tom Selleck.

    Wife said Parnell Roberts.
Daughter said a bald Sam Elliot.

Son would have said "Me" ( meaning him) ( he's a carbon copy of me, just with more hair, and less belly)
