I am thinking about building a dissipoter upper but with a free float. I know I will not be able to do standard F-post site. I was thinking either a railed gas block or low profile with long handguard. I am leaning towards a low profile gas block with long handguard on a stripped dissaptor barrel for the cleaner look.

I'm doing a similar build. I'm calling it my recce build. Spare parts mostly. It will be camo'd .

Why not? Plenty of options out there. Google 'free float dissiapator' for lots of pictures to give you ideas. What type of handguard are you thinking? Quadrail? M-lok?

It will depend on the barrel. I know if I go true 16" brrel with rifle gas system I will be limited to what I can find, many appear to be on the heavier side though I have found few in gov't profile. The heavier the barrel the lighter the handguard. Still trying to decide on what sights to go with, this will most likely be an iron sights only rifle. So I was sort of thinking detachable carry handle with a rail mount front sight.

You can do a faux dissipator with mid lengthgas barrel and lo-pro gas block under the handguard and then use an F-marked FSB pinned to the barrel at rifle length... Barrel options basically unlimited if you do that.

Not a fan of the F-Mark because getting it off if I decide to change will be almost impossible. I am looking the mid length option but sort of really want the rifle gas system on a 16" barrel.

16" barrels with rifle length gas can be a little touchy. Not much dwell time meaning you'll be depending on hotter ammo to keep the thing running consistently.

    Better off with a middie.

I'm using a 16'' (carbine gas) because that's what I had lying around. Rock River chrome moly barrel with military cutout. It's a good shooting barrel, but I'll have to rely on a rail-mounted front sight.

I think a lot of that has been taken care of. I know the old gas port size of .640 was the issue but with opening at .750 it should be fine.

Basically you are talking about a Recce build. It should have mid length gas with a 14.5" barrel w/a pinned welded muzzle device to bring it to 16".

These are great rifles and run smother than carbines. They also give you a longer sight length for iron sights. I put a 1-4 scope on my Recce build and it is a great all around rifle.

You basically described the last build I did except I had a 13.7" barrel with a 4" muzzle device.
