A friend just moved to the Deep Creek area.He has a German 8 mm Mauser rifle with 4 full bandoliers and some loose rounds he wants to sell.He has no idea what its worth or what to ask for it.

Can someone recommend an honest ,local gun shop for him to visit?
I will pass on any info I get from here.
    Thanks
    Mike

He would probably get a better idea of value from some of the people in the C&R section here if you post some pictures. Just walking into a gun shop you may or may not find someone who knows about older stuff. Might find a buyer too.

Wide range of value in a German 8mm Mauser rifle.
    WWI, WWI etc.

You can have an original with or without e duffle cut, Russian capture with or without the stamps peened, then there are Mitchell Mausers which are basically refurbed or faked.

Without posting pictures, study what each of those things are or do his own research. Posting pics to C&R section gets the best overall advice on value.
There will be of course a range of opinions but average it all out. Mitchell Mausers will look too clean to be real. Russian Captures have an X stamped on the top where the factory mark is (where most mausers have a crest) above the chamber

Post any words , letters etc stamped on the receiver.
Bolts electropencel serialized (Russian captures have this)

    Pictures, pictures, pictures.

Value is somewhere between $100 and $5,000. It’s pretty hard to guess what it is without either a picture or a detailed description. It could be a butchered up bubba rifle worth next to nothing, or a mint condition super rare variant that all the cool kids want. Although if I had $1 for every Turkish, Spanish, Yugoslav, etc. Mauser that someone’s grandpappy brought back from “the war” I’d be able to buy all of the $5000 Mausers I could carry. :D

Years ago, I bought a Mitchell's M48 Yugo billed as an M48 Yugo for about 300 bucks to use as a shooter, and I am happy with it. They said that these Mausers were in storage packed in cosmoline for the world war that never came, and they were not kidding. I spent a couple hours cleaning mine until the bolt worked correctly. At the time those WWII K98 jobs on their site did look to good to be true.

OP said 88 Mauser so it could be a 1888 Commission rifle or it could be an M88/05. On these rifles you have to watch the chambering as some conversions to S Patrone cartridges were poorly done.

Gew 88 prices have jumped but IMO are not warranted.
These were $200 only a few years ago and you had to reload to even shoot them even though as John says, they will chamber an 8mm mauser round.
All the sudden Royal Tiger started selling them for ridiculous prices and people are buying them, next thing you know people are listing them for $600 on gone broker

remrug, at least pick someone and send them some pics if you want a good valuation of the gun, Most gun shops will tell you what they will buy them for which can be as little as half what they try to sell for. (not always and not everyone). But they have to have a profit. I was at a shop years ago and guy was selling what I'd call a $350-$400 Enfield. Shop said he needed to buy low to sell and offered $200 store credit. I told him I had $250 cash right there and then and guy still traded it in to the shop.

He sent me pictures. It’s a fair to good condition 1941 dated Model 1938 K.Kale Turkish Mauser. The ammo is Turkish surplus with the cupronickel jacketed bullets.

Turkish mausers can be all over the map
Look at how much it was refurbed and how many serial numbers match .
    Middle ground is $400-500

There are a bunch on Gunbroker in that $400-500 price range with zero bids. None with actual bids are over $200. They are not now and have never been $400-500 rifles unless it is a German GEW98 or a Czech 98/22 from Turkey that wasn’t molested in the 1938 model upgrade program. There are exceptions, of course, but run of the mill Model 1938 K.Kale rifles are not the pricey ones. Realistic prices for Turks that actually sell is $150-$250 depending on how much rust, wear, and mismatched numbers. Most have had very hard lives.

    I have a couple I’ll sell you for $500 ;)

I bought 100 from Century for $10 each when they were first imported. I’ve been selling them slowly for 20 years. If they were worth $400-500, I’d have a lot less.

Make sure if he is shooting it to clean properly. That Turkish ammo is SUPER corrosive. A few rounds without cleaning, and the bore will turn into a sewer pipe in a couple days.

I’ll have to pull my Mitchell’s out of the safe- been a long time since I thought about that one. Outstanding shooter- didn’t mean to derail but they don’t get mentioned often.

Here’s my blast from the past thread with my $400 K98:
