A friend was having a similar issue and ended up taking the Texas online safety course that doesn't require a field portion. He used that to get his license.

It may be worth looking into if he can't find an appointment in Maryland.

If you are over 18 Texas does not require the field day.

If you want to get on a list you almost have to check it every couple days. They fill up very fast.

Switching to largely online vs in person Hunter Safety classes had the unintended consequences of making a Maryland Issued H.S. Card harder , not easier .

That was related to my point .

When you signed up for the traditional , in- person class , it inherently included the Entire Class . Took some upfront determination and commitment , but that all that hard to do , unless you waited for mid November . ( As long as you work/ live a M-F 9-5 lifestyle , but that's a separate gripe .)

Sorta on line has unlimited ability to take the on line " classroom " , but not enough slots for Field Day for 10% of on line students .

    What is happening:

Candidates are reserving their seat in a field day.

Instead of waiting for what they signed up for, they continue looking for more convenient field days, or sooner field days.

After they are successful in completing said field day, they never free up the reserved seat from the first field day.

So 1 person has taken up at least 2 spots. The number of wasted seats goes up when you start counting family members, and/or various friends.

Thanks for all the help. He took the Texas course online and got his certificate!!!

Glad to hear it. I was gonna suggest that but was beaten to the punch. I did the same thing. I've been hunting almost 50 years(has it really been that long???) and really saw no point in going through the class and field day just for a piece of paper.

Thanks for this advice. I've started the NRA Texas course as well. I hunted for many years earlier in my life in upstate NY, but my paper hunter safety cert that I carried for years didn't survive. So, this Texas online option works well for me.

My gf has the same issue , has hunted for years took the class and now can't get a field day. We will try the Texas route. Thank goodness my parents sent me through when I was like 8 or 10 , before all this madness
