So i have a buddy who just got his C&R and he asked me what he should get now with a $1500 budget. Consider it his starter set... He currently only owns a Chinese type 56 SKS and a Polish P64. Here is the list i gave him...

    1) Mosin M44 (i prefer a carbine length) $225-$250
    2) Field Grade M1 Garand $600 (CMP)
    3) Star Model B 9mm $350-$400
    4) K31 $300-350

    What say you?

Is he a shooter, a collector, an accumulator, or all three?

There's a lot to be said for buying guns one at a time, and spacing them out a bit. I think you enjoy each one more that way. So much of the fun is in the acquisition, and that first week or so of ogling, and stripping, and caressing her...

Where was I? Oh, yeah. I vote for one at a time.

I'd recommend a Service Grade instead of a Field Grade for that first Garand. Prices go up after January 5, so that's a hint to order now.

You didn't budget for ammo. He'll want some of that, too.

Instead of a M44 Mosin, perhaps a good fundamental 91/30. A real classic, probably a better shooter than an M44, and the difference pays for the upgrade from a Field Grade to a Service Grade.

Or if he wants a really good shooter, a M39 Finn before prices get too much crazier, though that busts the budget.

A K31 is probably a smart thing to grab while they're still reasonably priced. He should get a case of GP11 ammo too.

I'm skeptical about the Star B. It seems some are good shooters and some are jammomatics. CZ82s are good shooters... How about a nice Beretta M51 from Copes?

    Here's my 2 cents;
    1) Mosin M44 (i prefer a carbine length) $225-$250 OK
    2) Field Grade M1 Garand $600 (CMP) OK
    3) Star Model B 9mm $350-$400 - A M39 Instead OR a Enfield
    4) K31 $300-350 OK

    Of course I started with a plain-jane 91-30:

(Sadly I sold it to find another rifle)
    and now I have this:

Would your buddy prefer several inexpensive guns or one or two nicer pieces? My first C&R was a 1943 P.38, and I love it.

He likes to shoot so I guess I would say he is would prefer the surplus side of the C&R house. Guns that have readily available surplus ammo around. I think he also wants to get his stable stocked with more than just a couple guns.
