Just pulled the trigger on a police turn-in Beretta Model 96 from the great guys over at A1 Uniforms and want to hear any opinions on it. Any thing I need to look out for, change, upgrade immediately?

    Ready, set, go...

As far as inspection goes, there's a thread over at arfcom that has a great overview of the failure points in the Beretta 92 series:

As for changes and upgrades, it depends on what your preferences are. A lot of people don't care for the Beretta's DA trigger, so you can maybe get a lighter mainspring for it if you want. But yeah, all that's up to you. I'd suggest trying it out as it is before you change anything.

The 96 is a nice soft shooting gun. It is the only pistol that i would buy in 40 SW. The recoil on it is almost as soft as a solid steel 1911.

I have one. It's a nice .40. I am just not a big fan of the LONG 96D trigger pull anymore. I guess I could do something about it, since I do like the firearm.

It is a great gun, super accurate, and a phoenomenal deal. P.s. Greg and Mike did not pay me to say this.

I have one of their 96 LE trades and love it. There is nothing that needs to be changed on it. If you really have money to burn on it then you may want to get new night sights. The ones on the 96 LEs don't glow anymore at night.

I have a 96FS that was a police turn in also. I picked it up last year. The only thing that I changed was the guide rod. I got rid of the plastic one and got a steel one. My experience is that when the gun gets hot, the plastic one tends to warp and might cause jams.

Cool input guys, thanks! Never really gave Beretta's any thought before but it was in my very limited price range so I will enjoy it nonetheless. I was thinking about refinishing it down the line.

I really can't wait to get it home now. It really was a last-minute/impulse/desperation/blind haymaker/feel the iron curtain closing in on my civil rights purchase. Been online all day reading about the gun. My brother has a Taurus PT99 so I am vaguely familiar with the platform but it has been a while since I've handled it.

I picked mine up from them a few weeks ago. Accurate and soft shooting. The night sights could be brighter but the only addition I can think of would be a light rail for HD. It even came with the Houge grips I like even if two screws are missing.

I would install a new recoil spring to be on the safe side. Then start a round count and replace it every 3000-4000 rounds.

The 96 is a solid pistol. Its only faults are really that it's large, heavy, and some people hate the trigger. The 92/96 is Beretta's best pistol line, by far.

All the 96s we are selling already have metal guide rods installed, so no problem there. ;)

There are all double/single guns, so the long trigger pull only comes into play once per mag unless you decock.
