Low assault-weapon registration stats suggest low compliance with Gov. Cuomo’s landmark SAFE Act gun control law
    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/pol...s-registry-numbers-released-article-1.2267730
Fewer than 45,000 assault-style weapons have been registered in New York state since a landmark gun control act took effect in 2013, state records released Tuesday show, suggesting that Empire State gun owners are largely ignoring one of the signature elements of the watershed legislation.

In the years since Gov. Cuomo signed the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, otherwise known as the NY SAFE Act, a total of 23,847 people have applied to register their assault-style weapons with the state, according to statistics provided by the New York State Police.

I think that article is from June 23, 2015, if that makes any difference. I doubt that many more of the approximately 1,000,000 estimated "assault rifles" have been registered. About 4.5% compliance rate.

And now a NY Democrat wants you to turnover your social media accounts passwords prior to registering or renewing registration on weapons. WTF? Placing NEW conditions to the SAFE Act. Just saw him on Tucker and he never answered Tucker’s question on “if this is such a great idea how come you only want to restrict it to gun owners”? Coming to a state near you!!!

President Trump has a New York pistol permit. This would give the police access to all his social media posts, especially all the private messages between him and Putin...

So the few percent that complied and registered their firearms would be rewarded for following the law by having their social media accounts and search histories scrutinized. Lovely.

Way more than "a few." Probably more like millions, because New York has very strict registration and permitting laws, and has had them for many years.
Was referring to the article in the OP (from a couple of years ago) which suggested low compliance in registering "assault" rifles owned prior to 2013 as mandated by the SAFE act. Apparently the politician wants to include these folks in the deep cavity internet activity search. Perhaps these numbers have risen and compliance is better than it was in 2016. My point was, should this new enhancement to the SAFE act pass, that they've provided a compelling additional disincentive to people in other states from complying with semi-automatic rifle registrations. Perhaps the state of NY already had records on such owners prior to the 2013 legislation. (As they did handgun permittees)
