The NEM has superb classes. For those that may not know, the guy that runs the classes, Rol Anders, K3RA, is the FCC Amateur Question Pool Committee Chairperson. So, basically, he has the insight on every question. Wording, meaning, etc. I took a total of five classes up there, from Tech to Operating and even a Propagation Class. Top notch staff with a nice station. If you show up for the class a half hour in advance he even runs a CW class for all who want it.

You betcha!

Fldigi is sort of a pain, but functional. My friend Shawn, KB3ZHC, and I experimented with 5watts on 2M using PSK31. Our farthest simplex connection so far is 7.8 miles.

I dont have my HF antenna set up permanently right now but I do for VHF.

Shoot me a PM and we'll set up a time to try it.

Just got my technician license at the CARA show last weekend and have asked the POC at NEM about the General class. Thanks for the info!

No plans for setting up a shack just yet. I've got a lot on my plate but I have a donated Titan DX antenna in the basement that I'm looking forward to poking up over the garage in 2020.

My youngest kid is also interested in getting a license primarily for getting into drone racing.

Congrats!
I recommend checking into a local net at least once a week. I made the mistake of not doing much with my tech ticket right off the bat and lost interest. Make a small goal like one contact a week or something easy just to use it.

Access to more HF frequencies. Depending on what you are doing, that can be important. If you are in to working dx, it is important.

For anyone planning to hit the Linthicum (National Electronics Museum/Nursery Road) exam session this month:

Please note that at the ARRL Exam page and in my posts above, date info was/is incorrect.

The actual exam date this month is one week sooner, Tuesday, October 22nd.

This was just verified with our Team Leader, who also points out that we conduct exams every 4th Tuesday, except December (no exams). Our club calendar does show the correct date: https://sites.google.com/site/maryla...ndars/calendar

As with the AA club, these exams are FREE, so do it.

Upgrade from General to get your Amateur Extra endorsement?

This^^^^

If no DX, then you can have a fine time with a General ticket. If you are not electronically inclined and/or have difficulty with the exams, the General is a decent place to stop and gives you a huge area to work. Realizing that not everyone is an AE or Advanced, most domestic contesters stay in the General ares of the bands anyway, as to not rule out potential contacts/contest points.

I am a new HAM and considering going to the Hamvention in 2020. Is there enough going on to justify staying for whole 3 days? I wanted to take my plane to the local airport there and camp but I am not seeing a lot of tent camping. Is there any?
