I'm a total newb with red dots but want to get one for my Ruger MKIV 22/45. From what I've read and seen in vids, I think I've narrowed it down to a Vortex Venom or a Burris Fastfire III. The Vortex seems to be about $50 more. Anyone like or dislike these?

I have several FFIII and think it is the perfect sight on my Ruger 22/45. They also can take a beating and keep on working as the one on my .44 Magnum rifle proves. I shoot full .44 Mag rifle loads and it never missed a beat. I hear good stuff about Vortex but I have never had the opportunity to try one out.

Thanks! Do you have the 3 MOA?

Burris has been great, had it for a couple/ few years now. I think for your application it will work. I have no experience with the venom.

Thanks, feeling quite confident going with the Burris now. Appreciate the feedback, love this board, extremely helpful.

That's a nice setup. Are they the original grips?

They are not original grips. They are Brazilian cherry and I got them on eBay for a surprisingly good price. The medallions are factory ruger medallions and the grips are very well made and fit perfectly. They shipped from some country south of ours; it has been a while so I don’t recall which central or South American country it was.

If you haven’t I’d suggest putting a tandemkross or similar aftermarket hammer/ seat in the trigger assembly. It vastly improves the trigger and is a cheap mod. Also get the spacer to remove the magazine safety. While you have it apart take the bolt release piece out so you can slingshot the slide/ bolt. All easy to do, but that sear is slippery. So you will drop it at least 10 times before you get it installed.

I previously compared the venom to a friends ff3. I ended up putting 2 venoms on my 10ga and 12ga turkey guns. I chose the venom because it seemed better for a field gun. The vortex had better adjustability for the brightness controls and larger field of view. The auto bright of the burris didn't seem like it took into account the lighting down range. So if you are shooting from a darker position into the light the dot would get washed out and barely be visible.

Here is a good video of the comparison.
