 thats not what i meant. its not his responsibility to protect the neighborhood and yes taxes pay police salaries argue all you want thats how it works. and your statement is exactly what i'm saying.... who the hell is the OP to take it upon himself to go out armed looking to stop crime? i protect myself in my home and on my property but i am not allowed to leave my "castle" if you will and shoot someone at the first sign of trouble.

this is just like that post a couple weeks ago about the guy here who pulled a gun out on a drunk guy in his backyard.

We do pay police salaries with our taxes. I mean they arent there to "protect" us from crime.

Neither should the op "protect" his neighborhood from crime.

I thnink the op was thinking of going on a neighborhood watch while armed to protect himself from being the victim of a crime. And maybe the sight of a gun would be a possible deterrent.

In general, open carry of a handgun is illegal (except for the range, your property, etc.) unless you have a permit. That said, there are no laws prohibiting the open carry of an unloaded long gun that I am aware of.

There's no state restriction on loaded longarms that aren't in a vehicle. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to hunt with one.

§ 10-410. Restrictions on hunting wildlife generally [Amendment subject to abrogation].
    (c) Hunting from vehicles.-

    (1) A person may not shoot at any species of wildlife from an automobile or other vehicle or, except as provided in § 4-203(b) of the Criminal Law Article and Title 5, Subtitle 3 of the Public Safety Article, possess in or on an automobile or other vehicle a loaded handgun or shotgun, or a rifle containing any ammunition in the magazine or chamber.
