Was surprised to see unharmed security roaming K-9 patrols. German Shepard's and a breed that I am not familiar with, BUT one BIG friggin dog.

Not sure about the rest of the hospital.

Any ideas on why & when did they start?

I've seen unarmed security with big dogs at GWU Hospital.

There's a lot of theft by "visitors" at hospitals. Also occasional outbursts of violence aimed at staff - most often nurses, as they are the most readily available identifiable caregivers. Big dogs can be useful.

Mercy hospital has had K9 officers for at least 10 years, probably longer. It’s amazing how quickly belligerent people can calm down when the dogs show up in the ER...

Hospitals routinely use trained dogs for bedbug detection. These are private contractors though.

Why? Because a couple of hospitals have had a gun shot victim in the ER due to gang violence; when the perps found out he survived, they went into the ER to finish the job.

    Yup...

And the other reason they have dogs is that the Hospital is located in Baltimore Shitty where bad stuff happens every day...
