I ordered two Mosins from Classic Firearms on Monday, a M 91/30 and M44. They arrived this morning. I was surprised and impressed of the quick delivery from CF. I wanted to add the a nice M44 to my collection. I included the 91/30 for $109 + $10 for the hand select since I was already paying for shipment. It's hard to resist a rifle with all that history for under $120 bucks. How did I do?

Nice! Looks like an ex-sniper. Is that, "CH" at the top of the chamber?
Pull back the bolt and look for filled in holes.

^first thing I thought when I saw the receiver. Hard to tell. We need a pic of the open bolt to see if there are any plugged scope holes on e left side of the receiver.

This pisses me off even more that I ordered two hand picks and they sent me two non-stamped matching marginal rifles. A-holes.

    Way to go, OP!

You got brass barrel bands too. As I understand it those were generally made for factory foremen or other officials to commemorate production targets or some such thing. I got a 44 Mosin with them.

Do you mean the brass on the handguard? I don't think that's correct. The brass was used before they switched to steel that was painted black. Some handguards still have the brass but it's painted over. That story sounds like something a dealer would tell you to help sell a rifle.

The more I look at that receiver, the more convinced I become that it's an ex-sniper. That's a easy $200+ rifle.

Well that may be, I'm a neophyte, but I didn't buy because a dealer sold me on it due to the brass, it just arrived randomly, and it wasn't obviously to see it casually because it was covered with grime and corrosion. So I did some research and at least at least it is uncommon to have the brass on the hand-guard end caps (I stand corrected calling it a barrel band) as per here http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinFeatures04.htm

As to whether the brass has any significance other than an early model or random use of available materials, I understand that this is unlikely, but I did read somewhere that sometimes it was specially done here and there, for what it is worth, which I reckon isn't much.

Shouldn't it have a scope serial number on the left side of the receiver that's lined out? It is possible that it was scrubbed instead of lined out, you can see the top of the Tula star looks like it could have been hit in the process. Inside of the receiver will tell for sure....

I have an ex sniper that the scope number was scrubbed off of, but it clearly has the "CH" (it's a Tula) and the scope holes on the inside. I think the Molot serial number goes where the scope number would have been, so prolly all the scope nums were taken off for the import mark.

From the factory, only Izhevsk snipers had the scope number applied to left side of barrel. Tula snipers were marked, "CH" or "CN" from the factory.

Upon entering refurb, some arsenals applied scope numbers to Tula snipers.
But a Tula sniper going through refurb and having a scope/mount removed (turned into an ex-sniper), would not have a need for a scope number.

Only the Molot Tula snipers have a scope number on the barrel shank, and all evidence suggests that they did this stamping themselves. As for the brass endcaps on the handguard, prettier but not all that unusual, doesn't seem to add value as far as I can tell. Could very well be an ex-sniper, marks are in the right place and 1943 was the most popular year.
