Congressman Matt Gaetz announced today on his podcast the ATF is crafting secret rules restricting the possession of certain pistol braces by American citizens, and that he has sent them a letter demanding they stop. "We understand that ATF is currently considering restricting one arm brace model owned by over 700,000 Americans," Congressman Gaetz writes along with six other members of Congress. "We strongly urge ATF to cease taking any actions and reconsider or rescind any secret determinations which call into question the legality of firearms owned by millions of law-abiding Americans."

I haven't seen any other mentions of this, but probably worth keeping an eye on.

Someone needs to put them (the ATF) on a tight leash, they are dictating laws outside of elected positions by offering opinions about what is legal and not.

Why won't he mention what brand and model of brace? That's more helpful to people than being vague.

    a) whoever informed him didn't give him that info

    b) he doesn't want to ruin a company by causing purchases of their product to come to a screeching halt due to something that is not their fault

ETA : just throwing out possibilities, I have no inside info

Today the ATF looses $200 per brace sold in the USA.

    $200*700000 = $140,000,000 in lost revenue.

You bet your ass they are gone.

ATF has the capabilities to make the entire NFA purchase process take 250ms + the time it takes for the credit card gateway to respond. They want some of that brace revenue? They need to step to late 90s level tech.

I agree. Just did two form 1's via efile. That site is atrocious for 2020

How in the holy hell did ATF survive their debacle at Waco? They should be on the scrap heap of former government oversight organizations.

ATF bubbas...I know you read this forum regularly...you are in the executive branch. Not the legislative branch. Not the judicial branch.

Y’all need to quit FN around with shit. Be consistent, be fair and don’t F with things. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Speaking of broken...your approval process is right out of the Flintstones. Surely you can do better. Don’t be offended. We pay for some level of service and Responsiveness. If you were in business and worked at that rate, you’d be out of business. It ain’t the employees, it’s management. Y’all can make it better. Hell, find an industry standard process and copy it. Try HAMAZON. Y’all are even worse than the uSpS. Honest.

I vaguely remember on a Primary & Secondary podcast someone making a comment in passing about the ATF starting to get squirrelly about braced AR pistols equipped with certain optics like, LVPOs and high magnification optics. Didn't go into any detail about it.

Playing devil's advocate, one could possibly argue that it would not be possible to use a braced AR pistol as originally intended with a short eye relief scope.

No idea if it is related.

That's not how they're funded though, that money goes to the Treasury. ATF gets their budget through Congress like everyone else.

Well the SCOTUS just told the ATF that they can do anything they want because apparently the 2A is dead.

What power does a congressman’s letter have over the ATF, I find difficulties trusting either.

Congress can royally screw any government agency by not funding them or otherwise punishing them. It's not the letter itself, it's the regular power of the purse and law making abilities.

But but, we have a Republican president in office so our 2A and lack there of, of a bigger government intruding should be protected...
