Do you have a particular brand of ammo to shoot?

Do you look for price or quality in target ammo?
    115 grain? 124 grain? or 147 grain?

    Choice for "Personal Protection" ammo?

    115's 124's or 147's

Just got a 9mm Sig. Basically look for target ammo around 15 to 20 cents a round. Protection ammo should not cost more than 25 cents a round.

Questions are with cavitation and penetration and bullet weight.

My personal preference for defense is 45 acp with WWB 230gr hollow points.

Bought the 9mm for my wife to shoot. Going to range this week.

    Thanks for any advice.

I use federal factory ammo in both 9mm and .40S&W. The reason is that some of my guns have light hammer springs and federal loads with softer primers. Usually under 20 cpr for both 124 and 147 grain. Both shoot fine.

Protection ammo costs what it costs. I use HST or gold dots. I'm not in favor of going cheap with lives on the line.

I don't know any good factory hollow points that are only $0.25 a round.

I carry 147gr HST +P. I got a bunch of 50rd boxes at $25 per, but the +P is no longer listed on the website and Vista now enforces the LE only restriction on their 50rd boxes. They chrono just about exactly the 1050 FPS advertised from a Glock 19.

I use different JHP depending on the gun. My 43 for example likes Hornady Critical Defense 115g but didn’t like Hornady Critical Duty 135g. For my 40s I have a mix of Winchester Ranger, Federal HST, etc.

I’ve been using Remington UMC 9mm Luger Ammo 115 Grain FMJ for target practice which is $0.15-0.16 per round. I’ve also used a comparable American Eagle round but it’s more expensive and I see no difference in the way they shoot so I save the $20 and go with the UMC.

For defensive ammo I’ve been using Hornady Critical Defense 9mm Luger Ammo 115 Grain which has been costing $0.70 per round but I’m about to order some Fiocchi Extrema 9mm Luger Ammo 115 Grain Hornady XTP Jacketed Hollow Point since it’s only $0.52 per round.

Edit: I copied the name directly from Target Sports since I’m on mobile and didn’t feel like trying to jump back and forth to type the names. So apologies for all of the unnecessary Luger and Ammo’s in the previous text because of it.

To answer the questions raised in the OP. I go by price and brand when it comes to target ammo. I want cheap but I also want a well known brand. I like 115s simply because they are the cheapest round usually, if 124s are cheaper I’ll get them.

For defensive rounds I’ve only bought 115s since that’s all Critical Defense is available in since I don’t want the Lite 100 grain variety. I’ve considered some of the underwood offerings but haven’t given them a try yet because of price.

    I bought Winchester 9mm 147 gr HP today at WM 21.77 + tax = .2307 cents for 50 rounds.

ballistics 990 ft ps and 320 ft lbs energy.

    Yes WM 100 round box Federal 9mm 115 gr FMJ $16.97 + 6% TAX = 18 Cents a round.

I've been using Federal 124gr FMJ for the range in both my P320 and my 9MM AR. I've also run Sig Elite Performance 115gr and 124gr FMJ as well as Sig 365 115gr FMJ. For defensive rounds I use Sig Elite Performance V-Crown. I've tried both the 115gr and 124gr versions and like the 124gr better. When I place my next ammo order I'm going to try the 147gr V-Crown and assuming my P320 likes it will be switching over to it.

You did your math wrong. A box of 50 for $21.77 is $0.435 per round before tax.

    Depending on the gun:

    Short barrel compact Sig P365:
    DT 77 grain:

    https://www.gunsamerica.com/digest/ammo-test-doubletap-9mm-77-grain-for-compact-handguns/

    Everything else:
    Sig V Crown 147 grain:

    https://www.gunsamerica.com/digest/ammo-test-sig-sauer-elite-performance-v-crown-9mm-147-grain/

If for some reason I want something HOT:
DT 124 grain +p's (mainly just steel frame guns, horrible recoil for plastic)

I;m thinking the short barrel required the light fast ammo of 77 grains?

Interesting .. I have the P320 Carry X --CPO gun 3.9 inch barrel.

My preference is 124 gr JHP. It feeds reliably in everything I own which is what I consider the most important factor for my needs.

Got it. I have a new pistol or "CPO" so assumption is no misfeeds or FTF's.
using Federal 115gr FMJ. proven ammo.! Should be fairly accurate... aaahhh only the shooter maybe issue.

I'm picky these days. My preference is for 1) NATO-marked Q4318 124gr, 2) 150gr Federal Syntech, or 3) 147gr Federal HSTs. Which one depends on the purpose and the gun. I used to buy trash 115gr/124gr for plinking, but 124gr NATO is so cheap these days that I don't see a reason not to use it.

(If I'm reloading for IDPA/USPSA, I use the 158gr BNB bullets backed by 2.5gr TG at max OAL.)
