So Im going this Sunday to check out a 1891 ARGENTINE MAUSER CONVERTED TO 308... I know it has to be one made in the first few years of production because of the handguard (guess that's the correct term)... Is there anything else i need to be looking for?

    thanks in advance

That action is very weak for .308. If it's the typical low-rent conversion, accuracy at 100 yards will be basketball size, assuming you underload the ammo to avoid the unpleasantries of bolt through the brain (no joke).

Id pass on it............ 0 collector value and why would someone have converted it to begin with? Almost identical ballistics and yes, old action of questionable strength. Lot better econo guns out there.

Too many nice original 1891's out there to mess with a converted one. You can pick up a close to mint original one for 300 to 350 if you keep your eyes open. They shoot very well in the original 7.65 Argentine caliber.

Where did you find it? I had 2 converted to .308. Shot the blue 7.62 training ammo and reduced power loads thru mine? Did you get any pics?

Yeah, that is my old rifle. It was fun. I had 2 .308 Argentines. The first one was my favorite. This one was ok. Had the smoothest, slickest Mauser action I have shot.
Shot some of the blue training ammo and some 7.62 Cetme ammo thru it. Not a bad rifle, but I didn't pay 225 for it, nor did I sell it to the current seller for 225. In fact, he has had it for sale several times, and I even emailed him offering to buy it back from him for what he paid, but he wouldn't budge on price.

I believe there is a nce original 1891 at A1 guns. They are very well made and gooflooking guns and handle the old Argentine ammoq well. They however are not made to handle .308.
