I want to build one of these neat .45 mauser conversions.

    http://www.troupsystems.com/product/mauser-45-acp-military-barrel/

I'd like it to be a nicely functioning action but don't need a collectors item or some kind of match grade rifle.

They mention versions of the kits that would work with large ring and small ring rifles. So, I read up on some of the differences and most seem to deal with how available or collectible they were. Not if one was better than the other and why.

The troup website has these notes on which rifles to use.

These kits work with Mauser K98, Czech Vz22-Vz24, and Turkish Mausers the best… DO NOT USE YUGOSLAVIAN M48 rifles, it is very difficult to get them to work correctly due to the bolt face and feed ramp designs.

My goal is to shoot it in the factory stock but want the ability to upgrade to an aftermarket stock if I would like.

Any advice on picking the donor rifle?

ugly donor guns used to be hard to come by for a reasonable price. check firearms news for your action, an entire donor gun is a better option. there were a few curio and relics out there for around 200 rough and some antiques. i dont know if a 7mm would work, but those were the last i saw cheap.

I would go for the cheapest rifle you can get as you are going to replace the barrel and don't care about proof marks. Mix and match Turks are still available on Gunbroker for $150.

Since you are using a low pressure cartridge, I wouldn't bother to silver solder the sights back on. I would glue them on with Accraglas or one of the other bedding epoxies. It will be interesting to see how you regulate the sights for the .45ACP round.

I've been working on one on and off for a while now. The biggest problem i am having is the short .45acp needs to be 100% captive by extractor as soon as the round clears the the magazine. If not the round will not make it past receiver locking lugs and jams. I added weld to the existing feed ramp to extend it back toward the magazine. I've also started to relief the undercut on the extractor to allow the rim to slip up into it easier but i'm going slowly as I don't want to remove too much material. I used an old Spanish Mauser as the donor. It was already bubba'ed with a cracked stock and missing ejector spring.

Ive been kicking around the idea for a while now. I have an ATF Turkish mauser that was built off a gew 98 action. Rifling looks like dirty speed bumps. Now i see they come with threaded barrels as well which i see as a bonus. It would make an awesome suppressor host.

Exactly. Readily available and pretty cheap subsonic ammo. Even nice hollow points for a quiet fox gun.

Sarco has Mauser actions for sale. On one hand, the crusty old barrels are already removed. Of course, no other parts are included.

Another option would be to look for a sporterized Mauser. I've seen a few at gun shows that were solid but cheap.

if you catch them at a PA gunshow, they still have some of the crusty 7mm spanish mausers complete. They've been trying to unload them for probably 5 years now. Ive talked them into really good deals in past shows. Talk to the young guy with the heavy European accent. Dont know if he has more pull around there but he gives me the best deals by far. Theyre crusty but would refinish nice.

Actually the more i think about it i may be getting sarco mixed up with Gibbs. I just know i see them at the York shows on racks and nobody buys them. Theres even some already in sporter stocks if thats your thing.

Damn you OP, I looked at the link you posted, and now I want to build one to. Lol
As much as I think you shouldn’t bubba a surplus rifle, bringing life back into a already bubba’d rifle is totally fine. Now I’m on the hunt for a bubba’s special. Haha.

Some where I have a printed article written by Reid Coffield for doing the 45 conversion for I dont know how many years now. I'll have to try and dig it out. It was very well done and illustrated. Seemed like a nice project but surplus ammo was cheaper than 45 acp at the time.
None the less it was clever conversion and very interesting.

Oh had I known. I wouldn’t have gotten rid of my sporterized 1898 gewher that had seen better decades. That would have been a fun project.
