About 2 years ago I bought my nephews Savage 64 .22 from Dick's in Waldorf. I paid $179.00 for the scoped combo. It just took forever to get them guys to do the paperwork. One thing I've noticed about the Waldorf store is, they either know absolutely nothing, which is just fine with me, or they try to pound you to death with "their" knowledge, by the time they are done, I'm usually yawning and not even interested in the deal anymore I have the same dislike for Radio Shack sales staff, but, that's another story.

Anyway, If the price is right, then I'll wait, but, there is more than one place in this area to buy a simple .22 rifle for a 10 year old boy who just wants to hunt tree rats with it.

Bought my Marlin .22 there. Took awhile to get someone who worked in the gun dept. Then when they ran a background check they said it will take a couple days to get an answer. I thought it was supposed to be instant. Either way they arent that bad. They just dont have enough employees in that dept

Weird. The Dick's in Woodbridge has two guys I see all of the time working there. They're pretty knowledgeable and I can get my stuff pretty fast. The Manassas, Fairfax, and Sterling stores are not so good. The Sterling store used to be great until they moved to Dulles Town Center. And I'm still pissed at them for buying out Galyans. Feh.

This happened to be buying a rifle (also a Marlin 795) at a Dick's several months back. The NICS check came back "delayed" or some such thing, so they said I had to come back sometime in the next few days when the ATF got back to them with the go-ahead. They called me the very next day and I picked up the rifle.

I had heard before that Dick's has a reputation for getting flagged A LOT with delayed responses to NICS checks; I've now experienced and seen enough anecdotal evidence to believe there's truth to that. I guess Dick's has such a reputation for filing crappy paperwork that the Feds will flag and delay any of their transfers for the slightest reason?

I just bought a 10/22 from Dick's in Salisbury on Tuesday and i was extremely surprised how easy it went. I went in fully prepared to be aggravated but I was literally in and out in 15 minutes.

Dick's (at least the G'burg location) escorts you to the register if you're buying handgun ammo also. Not sure if they were having a lot of theft between the ammo counter and the door, or whether they think you're going to load up right there and rob the store. In which case they'd like you to pay for your ammo first.

IIRC they let you walk around with rifle ammo.

Jonny, what if you buy 9 mm ammo but say it's for a rifle? Then what do they do?

No way to predict!! At Wal-Mart when buying 22lr they asked me "for Pistol or rifle?" and I would mix it up to see what they'd do. If I said pistol they'd ask to see ID, but if I said rifle they'd just hand it over.

Dick's doesn't seem to ask. If I buy .45 they walk it to the counter(without checking ID, but I'm not lookin' 21 anymore), if I buy 30-06 they just hand it over.

Last year I was at Dicks in Glen Burnie and observed another customer who was purchasing two of the Marlin 22's that were on sale. He was told his application was delayed. That Saturday I saw him the same guy at Pikesville buying a shotgun with no problem. Leads me to believe Dicks may be the reason for the NISC check delay.

I bought a remington 597 from dicks for a $160 over the summer just because I wanted to go plink at a friends house. The sales staff at the huntvalley location was horrible. They kept acting like I wasnt of age to purchase a gun and were acting like they were doing me a big favor to sell it to me. I dont care if gun prices are higher at an actuall gun store, I will buy from them. If I ever have a problem, I can take the gun back to them and avoid all of the BS and in the long run.

I get excellent service from Dick's in Waldorf, unless it's a day when they are short on help, and even then they are polite and apologetic. I think it depends on the day/time/and who is on duty. And several folks have told me they were walked to their car with firearms purchases lately from several different sellers. Once it was locked in the trunk, the store personnel immediately seemed to lose interest, so maybe it's an insurance thing.

Bought a Weatherby PA-08 12ga pump from the Columbia Dick's earlier this year, staff was great. Shotgun's not bad either, just bought it to play with trap shooting as all my others are shorter barrel.
