    How is this contraption even possible? Or is it thanks be to ths wonders of photoshop?

    Not sure specifically but I don't think it can be fired like that. You unfold it and the buffer tube is re-engaged.

    I've seen similar "folding stocks" like that for ARs

    Extar does make a bufferless ar pistol. Or very close. I’d be interested in having a rifle version, just for the ability to fit a folding stock for compact carry with the ability to open as needed. not sure they make one though.

    As I understand the recoil mechanism is fully within the receiver, upper. I’ve seen the pics but never followed up on the reliability. Not sure how they stand up.

    They will physically fire and eject when folded, but they won't cycle the next cartridge into the chamber and it can't be good for the charging handle. A friend of mine fired his AR pistol with the brace folded just to see what would happen.

    I guess it could be done like the AR-180 with recoil springs within the receiver.

    Law Tactical's ARIC is basically going to do just that.
