As you might recall, the Democrats in the House decided to have their own task force to look into gun control in the wake of the school shooting in Florida earlier this year. The intent of the Democrats is to create a "package of substantial legislation to be introduced in 2019."
The Republicans had their own task force and chose to look at things other than gun control. A far, far better way to find solutions.
The task force meeting is open to the public and is being held on Wednesday, October 24 from 6 to 8 pm at:
George Mason University
Dewberry Hall South
4400 University Drive
Fairfax, VA 22030
RSVP to: kim@eileenfillercorn.com
The discussion topic is, "Guns and Domestic Violence: A Lethal Combination"
I have no doubt they will be pushing "red flag" laws as a "solution," so let's review the problem with such a law.
1. Red Flag laws deny a person due process before their guns are summarily confiscated by the police at gun point.
2. At some point, typically weeks or months after the confiscation, the person is finally given a chance to prove their innocence in front of a judge.
3. Red flag laws assume you are guilty and you must prove you are innocent. That's not how American laws are meant to work.
4. Red flag laws are not going to solve any real problems. The person whose guns have been confiscated because he is supposedly a threat to himself or others, is left free. So if he actually does want to kill someone or commit suicide, he can still do so at will. He can either commit the act with a tool other than a gun or just buy another gun. Lots and lots of options to kill others: knives, poisons, hammers, bricks, axes, hands and feet, etc. If the person is so dangerous, why isn't he locked up? Easy - all the gun controllers really want are his guns, it's not about actually saving lives, silly.
