And it starts - apologies if this thread is a dupe. I have zero hope that this garbage won't be pushed through.

An AWB law has to go through both houses. It can't make it through the senate on a simple majority unless the Dems scrap the filibuster, which multiple Dems have said they will not do.

To whatever extent they think they win elections promising to DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE WEAPONS OF WAR!!!!!! they really don't want to get this passed. First, because they know it will have zero impact on crime. And second, because they're rather be able to whine (and raise money on) the fact that the evil death-loving conservative racist nazi supremacist gun nuts prevented them from doing simple, sensible things about scary black guns. They like losing on this, because to them, that's a big win. Why would Bloomberg keep handing them millions of dollars for local and national campaigns if he actually got what he pretends to want over and done with?

"Common Sense Gun Control", "Social Justice", "For the Children", "Racism', and "White Privilege" are all now just Liberal dog whistles for when they have no facts, no evidence, and no substance to bring to a discussion of an issue.

Has nothing to do with effectiveness and everything to do with them listening to the fickle masses. They make the mistake of confusing what people want i.e.: safer schools, less crime etc. with "common sense gun control"

Even if you're just looking at a simple majority, I don't see something like this getting passed. No GOP Senator will vote for it, and Joe Manchin won't vote for it. That drops the Dems to 49 votes, and the bill fails.

Sounds like our rights are hanging by a thread, with one vote in it.

Really wish the NRA would kick WLP out and grow a pair. We could use some heavy hitters in DC

Don't be so sure about Manchin. To quote him:

"So no, we're not going to take peoples guns away, but there is things we should not have in people's hands."

News flash buddy, even saying something like "we're not going to take peoples guns away" sure comes off as you thinking you could if you wanted. You're not a parent deciding whether or not your kid gets to have candy. You are a public servant who's number one job is abiding by the Constitution. "Shall not be infringed" means that you have absolutely NO say in what we the people may and may not have. Sorry pal, you have no power over us.

With more than a third of the states eing Constitutional Carry, and four million plus NICS checks performed last month, it's not likely that gun bans will become a viable issue.

Try to remember that Maryland is different. Very different.

Dem fear tactics went too far, too fast, and it's biting them in the ass.

Definitely. WLP is poison. There’s no reason for him to be in that position for as long as he has...oh wait, there is one reason, it benefits him.

NRA needs new leadership to become effective.

    We need commonsense automobile control

For more information, see the NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts, 2019.

Over 37,000 people die in road accidents each year
2.35 million are injured or disabled by their accidents
Over 1,600 children under 15 years of age die each year
2 million drivers experience a permanent injury every year.
Road crashes cost the U.S. $230.6 billion per year, or an average of $820 per person
California and Texas have the highest rates of car accidents in 2018.
There is an average of one alcohol-impaired driving fatality every 48 minutes
Most fatal injuries happen during weekends and on holidays such as Thanksgiving when alcohol use is more predominant.

In 2019 there were approximately 15,292 killed by guns and out of that there were approximately 900 police shootings and included were suicides.

Don't they realize the Parkland Massacre has more to do with the ineptness of law enforcement combined with flawed social policies than actual gun violence?

Who am I kidding, just ban guns, herpa derpa derp.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, these are the annual numbers for willful, malicious, and accidental deaths involving guns (and do not include suicides involving firearms). The GVA has been reported to inflate numbers based on how they count. I'm not certain, but I think they include defensive shootings in these numbers below. See the jump from 2019 to 2020 ...

    2014 12,418

    2015 13,537

    2016 15,112

    2017 15,679

    2018 14,789

    2019 15,208

    2020 19,223

From March to December of 2020, many schools were closed across the US. Thus, school shootings, as horrific as they are, are not a significant contributor to gun deaths in this country. It was a massive, nationwide controlled experiment. Kids were kept out of school, essentially insulating them from potential school shootings. Only pointing this out because the school shootings are often used as the proxy for increased gun control, as what happened in Maryland and other states in 2013.
