House afire this morning, had rounds stored inside & they started cooking. You can hear them popping. Didn't find out what caliber, nor what guns he had.

Dangerous stuff. Did you respond to the fire?

The only time it is dangerous is if you leave the round in the chamber. There are a number of fire tests (search SAAMI fire test) that indicate that fire fighter turnout gear is enough to stop the shrapnel from exploding rounds.

That SAAMI video is very interesting and educational. Surprising how relatively little danger ammo presents when cooking off.

Check out Hatcher's Notebook for the original information on fire and ammunition, it is interesting. However, this does not apply to artillery shells, bombs, rockets and other munitions. When an arsenal goes it goes big. See the one someone, oh, don't say the Russians, bombed from a drone in Ukraine.

Myth Busters did an episode on this. The shell casing (having less mass than the bullet) becomes the projectile when cartridges are exposed to fire. It could probably put an eye out, but is far from lethal. If you have ever dumped a charge from a bullet out and set it alight you will appreciate that it's barely more than a quick flash. It takes the magic of physics to propel a hunk of lead down a barrel and focus that energy into something with deadly force.

Still that sound sucks for all involved.

Now wait a minute. Wasn't there a thread about a fire and police department responding to a report of 24 rounds of ammo being found in a crawl space in Texas? Didn't they clear the entire block because it was so dangerous. This guy SAAMI must not know what he's talking about. BTW, that's a strange way to spell his name. :D

Sounds more like they wanted to do a little civil forfeiture and didn't want anyone around to watch it
