Scope for Garand

As some of you know from my posts, I bought my father an M1 Garand from CMP. He called me yesterday and said, "you know, with my eyesight the way it is, I'm wondering if I might find it hard to see the target using those sights and I was looking around for an appropriate scope."

SCREEEEECH!! I said, "NO, I will fly to TX tomorrow and shoot you if you do that!" He says, "well, I thought these weren't all that collectible anyway since they've been put together/refurbed by CMP?" I said, "No dad, that IS what makes them collectible/valuable. Yes, it's not a $2,500 correct grade unissued rifle, but it's authentic." I told him that it's his rifle and he can do what he wants, but that it was my professional advice, as his legal and spiritual adviser, not to do anything, ever, that will permanently alter the receiver or stock.

So, IF he wants to add a scope, is there some kind of scout mount that will work on a Garand and won't be permanent?

I do know that they make rail systems that replace the top hand guard. I don't know how good they are though. http://ultimak.com/m12.htm

I seem to remember B-Square making a no gunsmithing (read no permament alteration) mount for these. There is a write up on the CMP site concerning it.

There is also that offset one that replaces the red sight assembly and grips to the sight serrations. I can't remember the name.

When you say CMP site, do you mean CMP or the forums?

A scope on a Garand?

Heresy, I say.
