  • And has requested that Maryland do the same. North Carolina has put a three-year moratorium on striped bass fishing. Apparently this all stems from the overharvesting of migratory spawning Edge fish and now he mature leadingage population is unstable. No response from Maryland yet but the possibility exists that there will be no trophy rockfish season in Maryland this year

Doesn't seem like it's been cancelled yet, but the liklihood is pretty good (based on the linked article). Couldn't find anything stating it has been cancelled at this point.

Not yet.. but the Maryland Department of Natural Resources being that their regulations are primarily driven by the Waterman's Lobby in Annapolis will probably wait until a couple of days before the season is due to open before making their decision. They have to weigh the merits of such a cancellation with the impact it might have on the commercial fishermen's ability to make a living of course. Just like they did when they put a moratorium on recreational crabbers keeping females but continued to allow commercial Watermen to slaughter the babymakers

There is some behind the scene wrangling going on. I was at the last ASMFC meeting in Alexandria, VA. The striped bass stock assessment is down for sure. The northern states were laying the groundwork to hammer Maryland on mortality. I’ve heard that some of the “wrangling” is that Virginia is going to make a push to have some of Maryland’s quota transferred to them. This looks to be an effort to curry favor from the northern states to get them to go along and vote in their favor.
