At least that is what it looks like. It says Winchester No 12 on the end and it is about 2 1/2 inches long. And it is brass. I have never seen one before and now I have one. Anyone have any back round on these?
Historically at the dawn of the Breachloading Era , they came first before paper hulls . And even after the introduction of paper hulls they remained in semi common use for decades .
As noted above , after paper shells quickly swelled up from the moisture in the Pacific Theatre, the .Mil started again purchasing Brass buckshot shells .
And back around the early days of CAS . there started a renaissance of Brass shells . Today you can get shells, dies , all the related components , and load data . If you're curious , check the websites of Ballistic Products , and Precision Reloading .

Winchester made a promotional wooden box of 25 about 30 years ago with brass cases. I had one for a long time until someone saw it and I gave it to him.
I have a ton of them. Most likely military 00 buckshot. They were actually used in combat up through Vietnam according to Canfield if I am not mistaken.
No problem. Here are a few photos of military shells. Two Winchesters and a Remington. The inverted shows the various ends including a sawtooth crimp Winchester.
He glosses over the re-sizing die, just saying it is "shop made". I don't know enough about reloading to know if they just modified an OTS part, or truely machined a one-off die.
Thanks for posting the video link Badger. I have a few old black powder shotguns I soot sometimes. I bought my 12 gauge brass hulls from Magtech and Starline Brass. Sometimes they dont have the 12 in stock. I load mine like in the video but never have used glue to seal the top. I use white silicone. I use a Q-Tip to get a dab of silicone and wipe it around just like the glue. Just a small bead to seal from moisture.
