The $150 870 Wingmaster is coming along. A new 20 inch barrel is coming in the next week or so. Once it arrives, the gun will be refinished. We have decided to keep it dark blued or black. We are currently looking at what will be cost effective, durable, and easy to do.

My pal Keith surprised me with a Magpul stock and forend. They, along with a Remington magazine tube extension, have been installed. It looks kinda goofy right now, but cool things are on the horizon.

Some pics from the process. There were a lot of times I forgot to take pics, especially when I cleaned 46 years of crap out of the receiver and trigger assembly.

The day I brought the gun home. No bluing to speak of....just a reddish brown finish.

The beginnings of removing what was left of the finish.

The barrel without the finish, against the receiver which had not been worked on.

Bluing gone from barrel and receiver and FIRST mag tube extension installed.

Final choices of updates. Decided against the aftermarket 3 round extension and installed a factory 2 round extension, Magpul SGA stock and M-LOK forend.

    Almost there!

Replaced the original barrel with a 1982 vent rib barrel with aftermarket rifle sights. Still not sure about whether the rifle sights will stay.

There are still a few things left to do. The shotgun will be refinished. We are leaning toward a Birchwood Casey cold blue. It's cost effective and pretty easy. I am going to try to get it to the range tomorrow and see how the shorter barrel works with the Magpul furniture. I took it out last weekend and the weight balance seemed off with the light weight stock and forend with the original 28" barrel. We'll see how it does shortly with the shorter barrel.

Thanks for following along. Sorry it's taken forever. I've been working on it when I have time and money, so it's been a slow process.

Instead of Bircheood Casey, use Brownell T-4 , if you go the home cold blue route. ( Brownell's OxphoBlue is maybe 5% more durable, but the T-4 gives much more even coloration.)

If your not set on blueing try duracoat. I had matching 1100, one I finished in a cold blueing and one in duracoat. The blueing looks like an amateur did it. The duracoat looks far better.

I've finished revolvers with 0% finish using T-4 . Done as-is (meaning) the shiney spots of holster wear left as is, with only degreasing) , it was a 200% improvement . *IF* I had used ( sandpaper of suitable grit, scotchbrite of suitable grit, bead blast, whatever) to give uniform surface finish, it would have potentially 300% improvement.

But that could have potentially rounded still sharpe edges, or messed with lettering. So I used the do no (potential) harm method. Not to mention 90% less prep time.

Thinking about any changes to your receiver?

I made the following changes to mine:

upgraded sear & carrier dog spring, larger safety and non-MIM extractor. Was going to add the police trigger group, but left it stock.

The innards are classic Remington and are smooth as another. We might do something further down the road, but leaving the inside as is for now.

Joe, forget the rifle sites, it's a waste of time with a HD gun. Put a bead on the end of it. When you go to the range set up some clay birds and see how slow it is getting on target with the rifle sire compared to a gun with just a bead. I've been where you are now if you remember the 500 I bought a few years back. I like the dura coat for your gun. Keep and refinish the original furniture and barrel so you can go back to original configs if you ever want to. I bought that 500 for $75 and spent more than its worth in extra's only finding out a used barrel to chop and mount on the original furniture would have been the best way to go.

    Looking good though.

The finish question all comes down to final results vs preperation and application efforts, and degree of perfection required. DuraCoat is at the upper end of home project final results. But prep is critical. T-4 is extremely forgiving in preparation and application.
