My brother in law is a good guy and was kind to give me 3 bricks of Aguila 22LR cartridges for Christmas. I had never even heard of Aguila rimfire ammo until the shortage that began in 2012, but was aware that it had developed a reputation amongst some for being decent ammunition.

Ammo was shot in a CZ 455 Varmint. I had one of those days where it seemed to me that I might not be shooting my absolute best, but count me impressed with the capability and consistency of the Mexican manufactured ammunition.

5 shots each at 50 yards, grid is 1/4 inch, no chrono set up today to verify but factory claims 1255fps.

One other note. Was it just me, or have others noticed too? I have NEVER smelled fired ammunition that smells like this stuff! I don’t know that it smells terrible necessarily, but it’s definitely different. Anyone know why by chance?

(Way to set myself up. This ought to be interesting....:))

It does smell particularly odd. But, I've never had a problem running it through my cans.

It's the Eley primed cases that smell like that. I don't know what they use in their primers but it definitely has a distinct smell.

John, you’re right. I’m seeing the same “Eley primed” references all over the net. First timer with it here, and it really took me WTH is THAT kind of aback. It’s both a strong and an entirely unique smell, and unlike any fired ammo smell I’ve ever encountered. Probably some proprietary compound where we may never find out what it is.

I’ve got an old Marlin 25 and I’m curious to see if it plays nice in that rifle also. If it shoots well there also, seems well worth 3.5 to 4 cents a round.

Do you find these to have a thick waxy coat? I loaded them in my Buckmark pistol single stack mags, and also other semiauto rifle .22 mags with nothing but failures. Every buckmark mag (3) , you'd peel off a round then the next would very slowly (if not just stuck) rise up. So when using these rounds, I had failure to feeds constantly. When I loaded these in a SA revolver, some were very difficult to seat, while CCI would just drop in the chambers.

Is your question in reference to the Super Extra, or to the subsonic flavor?

If the former, I noticed no wax coating whatsoever on the rounds I shot. Now my experience shooting this ammo is next to none, as it has been limited to only 50 rounds.
But I also checked some random samples of my remaining inventory. When checked visually, with fingertips and when wiping vigorously with a patch, I detect no trace of wax.

Maybe same brand, but lead rounds? That would bring wax into play.

If you are near Frederick gun show, there is a table with a few bricks at $20

Just thought I'd update this thread. I took my old Marlin 25 out yesterday and shot this Aquila ammo with almost the same results as pictured above from my CZ455. That Marlin was my first rifle and it has always shot very well, but I didn't see it running with the CZ Varmint. That did surprise me, and I'm now even more impressed with this Aquila stuff. I haven't yet run it across my chronograph, but when I do I'm expecting to see some tight deviations, if paper results are any indication. Didn't smell any better though! :D

Ammo that really smelled bad was the first Russian commercial stuff we started getting in the mid eighties. I think it was made by Barnoul. Man, it smelled like burning rubber tires and was dirty as hell.
