Here is another of my favorite pieces, I don't think I've displayed it here before.
First-year production Colt US Army model 1911, sold a couple of years ago by his grandson. the grandson said that the original holster had accompanied the pistol but had deteriorated over the years and had been discarded, I was able to find a correct period holster from 1912 that matched up with the pistol perfectly, complete with leg strap which is a rather rare find. 2 saw punch or sometimes referred to keyhole magazines accompany the pistol.

Shipped from Colt to the Antonio Arsenal on November 19, 1912. The pistol was issued to Major Leon Edgar Smith. The pistol accompanied him through his career.
Leon Edgar Smith was born: December 10th, 1882
Parents Hackman Abram Smith & Mary E. Lees*in Montgomery County Ohio.
Died January 10th, 1952 at age 69

09/15/1917 Co. K 3rd Infantry was re-directed to the 148th Infantry, 74th Brigade, 37th Infantry Division.
The year 1916 brought Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico. On 14 July 1916, the 3rd Infantry, Ohio National Guard, direct predecessor of the 148th Infantry, was mustered into federal service and rushed to duty on the Mexican border at El Paso, Texas.
Sept. 15, 1917 the 3rd Ohio was re-designated the 148th Infantry of Ohio.
Action seen by the 148th in WWI:
Battles of Meuse-Argonne, Ypres-Lys offenses at Recicourt and Avocourt. He was exposed to Gas while in battle in the Western Front.
148th Inf - 360th Inf - 357th Inf - Honorably Discharged 6/30/1919
I did extensive research on the major and also contacted the Ohio national guard historian he provided me a lot of detailed information on the major, he made several references to a book entitled "Illustrated review of the148th Infantry" U.S.N.G. 1917 Ohio. I researched the internet and was able to find a copy of this rare book, needless to say I was very pleased with the find.
