    Although surprisingly, the data is reasonably balanced.

    50% involve family. They highlight cars, knives, and arson and other techniques. 3 out of 4 guns were handguns. They also highlight deficiencies in
    the system:

    Ineffective protective orders, gaps in the mental health system, immigration bureaucracy and other lapses have been implicated in many cases.

    Odd to see the word "immigration bureaucracy and other lapses" in an otherwise liberal rag.

    and:

    Public massacres like Newtown account for 1 in 6 mass killings

    Breakups, estrangements and family arguments make up the majority of cases, though unrelated victims may be caught in the crossfire


    ... data does not support scary black rifle bans.

    gotta give credit where its due, I think that the data in the article and headline summaries are fair and balanced.

    That is actually a fairly respectable piece of reporting, for once, certainly in terms of the effort that went into it. It’s interesting playing around with some of the graphical display tools. I hope they keep it on line for a while.
