HK USP.40 is the most accurate gun I've fired.
HK VP9 is the most accurate gun I've fired
HK 45C is the most accurate gun I've fired.

    Which one is the hero?

Got the very first Sig P229 that arrived at my local shop in 1992. Couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with it. Compared to my P220 and P226, it was an abomination in the accuracy department. Kept it about a month and traded it for something else. Haven't owned another .40 since then.

I carried a Sig 229 for some time and found it to be accurate as needed for the job. It was never meant to be a target pistol. My only gripe was the grip to trigger length and the factory fixed that by providing a short trigger. The 229 was more robust that the 220 and 226 in that the slide was milled and not formed of bent and welded sheet steel.

I bought a Para Ordnance P-16 40 S&W not too long after they came out. Bought a P-14 Limited 45 ACP as well. I had read the hype about 40 S&W recoil being half way between 9 and 45. Didn’t quite understand it since the 40 operates at higher pressures and made similar power factors. Still, I tried it. Bruha...not a nickel’s worth the difference but there was slightly greater mag capacity depending on the chosen format.

I recently bought Robby Orent's match HK USP 40 Combat Competition model. Came with 10 factory mags and 10 boxes of 115g 1340 FPS match ammo. Heck those alone are worth enough that the gun was practically free. Extra recoil springs, 2 boxes of Fed 135g HP, Trijicon night sights, one holster, an HK tactical light, and one range bag. I plan on getting a .357Sig barrel for it and maybe a 9mm conversion one also. That way it will have the same barrels as my HK USP-C 357Sig.

When I was working at United from Late 2017 to mid 2018, we couldn't give away .40 handguns. It seemed like every other day someone came in to try and consign a .40 P229, Beretta 96, or any of the various .40 Glocks. Like others have said, most people were rolling with 9mm, those that wanted to go bigger tended to go with a .45 or a .357Mag, as well as some 10mm thrown in.

My thoughts on .40 is that it isn't a bad round, just a middle child of an awkward time in firearms ammunition development where before it truly became mainstream, it was outpaced by 9mm. Like rounds like 5.45, even though .40 is dying in popularity, it will never truly go away, but I do think we will see less common bullet weights and types etc become less available (just less variety).

I have a 40S&W P229. I won't trade it in or sell it. No value. I'll shoot all the ammo I have for it. Then I'll get a caliber X-change kit from Sig in 9mm. I do like the round and pistol. But, it's an oddball in my safe.
