Was at Bass Pro Shops in Arundel Mills yesterday with a friend who is looking to get back into freshwater fishing and interested in buying a boat. We looked at 2 they had on the showroom floor. One was the Classic XL with a 50hp. The price is 17K and change. Two years ago that same boat was 12K. The second boat was a deepV 175 walk-through. I don't remember what size motor was on it but that was 33K and change. Two years ago that was 24K. I feel bad for my buddy right now wanting to fish and looking at boat prices that are absolutely insane. Anyone have a nice used bass boat they are selling at a reasonable price? My buddy has cash.

They're still all over Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. I know a lot of people don't want to use Facebook but it's worth setting up an account with minimal personal info/no networking just for access to the classifieds. That is the number one place I've found for used boats, motors, and accessories - tons of stuff out there. Craigslist doesn't have much nowadays, almost all of that traffic has moved over to FB and FB has far fewer scams.

The best thing about boats of any kind is having friends that own them so you do not have to buy one. Break Out Another Thousand.

****God, isn't this the absolute truth. I have several friends who live in the Crownsville area that have nice homes with docks very nearby or on their property and they tell me the expenses on their boats are just *crazy*. Maintenance, more maintenance, winter prep, spring prep, summer servicing, fuel, fixing or cleaning stuff that breaks or requires professional work to make right, etc..

I just go to their home, and enjoy a really nice time at their place, head out on the boats to watch fireworks, or lounge about the water and water ski, tube, etc.. and help them clean up everything afterwards, etc... Even the little looking boats we see on the water that look sort of like the SS Minnow apparently cost well over $150k. The cool looking ones with the James Bond bad guy radar antenna things on the top that spin around are well over 5 million, with several over $20 million.

I'm perfectly happy chartering a boat with some friends a couple of times per year or hanging with friends that already own a boat versus buying a boat.

Owning a boat seems like 90% maintenance and upkeep and mebbe 10% fun. I can see the enjoyment, it's just not my thing. I'd rather hang with Ginger and Mary Anne.

A few years back my youngest son wanted to buy a boat price was 350K and it was 2 years old. He wanted me to look at it and make sure it was in good shape I worked on boats for over 21 years in the USCG. The boat was sitting in storage at the marina in Annapolis. It only has 212 hours on the clock everything looked good.

I asked the owner if he could but it in the water and we wanted to take it out for a run. He said we would have to pay for the travel lift and to have it serviced to get it running. I said let me check one more thing, I loosened the oil drain plug on the outdrive to check oil condition. Well after draining an ounce or so, the oil was milky white. This meant there was a leak in the out drive and the cost to repair could approach 20K. I told him good luck now that you know there is an issue you legally need to provide to any buyer.

After that the son decided boats were not for him. He did end up buying a 14 foot skiff and it sits at his dock in Rehoboth DE. He only uses it 1-2 times a year. He did ask me if I wanted it I said no have enough stuff around the house.

Outdoor recreation is becoming a thing for the wealthy as far as the equipment (Boats, lodging, etc)
The common man can still afford a canoe/kayak and the misc camping gear. BUT,,, "Access" is changing.

National parks are becoming severely over crowded, Remote Towns in Rural areas have been completely bought up by wealthy for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th vacation homes.
Access to the wilderness is being rationed: Many National parks have limited "timed" entrance passes,, it is like buying a concert ticket in the 70s-80s. Many mountain rivers have a 10+ year waiting list for a "permit" to float it,, or a lottery system with less than 5% chance to get a permit for 1 float that year.

When I was a kid,, dad threw the canoe on top of the car, back packs in the truck and we just "went"
20 years from now the wilderness will be reserved for the political elite

Get back to me in a couple years and see if you still think the same...lol

I do. My wife & I bought a 20’ pontoon boat from Bass Pro several years ago. It did have a serious problem right from the factory: one of the logs had two leaks from bad welding. It took them three tries but eventually they got that fixed, all under warranty of course. But after that, the boat has been a dream. We pull it out of the water, and I flush the engine and rinse down the logs after every trip to the bay, but other than that it’s been largely cost free & maintenance free. Change the oil, check for water in the fuel lines, etc. - all minor and routine stuff. Past the initial investment, it’s pretty much been pure fun.

    YMMV of course.

I learned many years ago not to buy a new boat. Since then, I have bought nice boats for far less money and have been very happy. The only bad experience I had was a trailer that came with the boat was rusted inside and a weld failed. That wasn't a big deal as I wanted a new trailer anyway and that gave me a reason for buying it sooner than later.

My buddy went the used route. He got a super nice 2005 Ranger Z21 with a 225hp motor. Lots of nice options and in very nice shape. Cost him about 20K. I think he made the right choice.

I curious how the 2022 new boat prices are going to be. I expect more price increases......

This is sad. I wonder how it still is in the southwest. When I was a kid, we would head out of city limits (Phoenix/Scottsdale) and all of the desert was for our taking.

It's still very busy out on the lakes and in the desert north of the valley. Costs are definitely up. $120k RV's with garages in the back hauling $40k side by side and towing it all behind a lifted $90k truck. Or a lifted $90k truck towing a $120k ski boat.

Big money out there in the desert.

ETA: The land is still wide open for public use and consumption. Maryland could take a clue from that idea.

It is a bit of everything. The US has twice as many people in it as there were 60 years ago.

Those people have to live somewhere and they are going to enjoy things too. A lot more people from cities and suburbs do "outdoor recreation" than 60 years ago too.

So you likely have 3x as many people headed to places that haven't gotten any bigger.

I'd expect prices increasing on many items Jan 1. Steel went up roughly 25% in 2021 and expected to continue to rise in first half of 2022. Lots of other commodites will follow. When we were ordering carpet for the basement, the encouraged us to place order before Jan 1 since there was a 10% price increase going in effect. (Most carpet is US made).
