357 Mag Revolver

Looking for a .357 Mag Revolver for hunting. Has to have at least a 6in barrel. Not looking for a show piece but something appropriate for the woods.

Thanks in advance.

Yes. Both are excellent.

I think the GP100 is built just a bit stronger and looks a tad bit cooler, but the 686 has a better trigger and higher resell value.

Can't go wrong with either.

I know, right!

I've already posted this many times before, but what the heck...

I'm going with the GP100, specifically the 4" stainless model. Mostly because I believe this to be just about the strongest popular revolver ever made. It will last several generations; it's the one 'last gun' I'd like to have in any real situation. There's even a special swat unit that uses them as their handgun.

4" because it seems to be perfectly balanced, and the marginal velocity advantage of the 6" doesn't seem worth the trade-off.

Yes, I agree the S&W trigger is a tiny bit better (double action) out of the box, but after firing it a few thousand times, it gets better; there's always the option of a proper trigger job too; which will take it from very good to great.

And the GP100 is less expensive.

S&W did make a 7 shot version of the 686-7 over a decade ago, wish Ruger would make a special 7 shot version of the GP100. Oh, I don't own, nor have I ever owned a GP100, I've just shot it enough to know it is in my opinion the best revolver on this planet, right now.

How's that for taking a position?

Blackhawk, GP100, SW 686 for me, probably in that order. If for Merryland deer, OP has 6 inch bbl. requirement covered. Make sure ammo rating exceeeds 700 fpe. Certainly doable, but OP will need to look to do ithat on purpose. Buffalo Bore etc.

Agree with the GP100... it's a tank, and butter-smooth.

BTW... your foot looks an awful lot like an AR15 receiver...

I have the Ruger and love it. We shot steel at AGC a few weeks ago, an 8" plate at 50 yards and I hit three in a row with the .357. Not breaking any records with that but it was damn satisfying. ha ha

Edit: I should have clarified that mine is a Match Champion, which has a few extra features. The primary one, and the one that made me choose it over the standard GP100, is the fiber front sight. Just did a quick search on gunbroker and the Match Champion is about $100-$150 above the standard. Either model would be a great choice, Ruger customer service is excellent.

Check the consignment thread under United Guns or email one of the other IPs to see if they have any for sale.

Adam,

I have a Taurus 6" .357 that you are welcome to shoot to see if you like it. I don't think I want to sell it just because it was my first handgun. Let me know.

That's what I carry while Deer hunting, except mine is blued.
As to Minuteman post about a 4" barrel, Marylandistan requires a 6" barrel for Deer & Bear hunting, I will have to check about smaller species.
