Oh they"ll shoot to where the scope is adjusted. Just not at same distances.

Just how powerful are they? I know they are quite low velocity. Just second guessing myself now. Neighbor had a cornered coon that I only had a bead on for about 3 seconds before it hid and couldn't get to it. No real chance of a head shot so I didn't pull the trigger. Certainly could have gotten a body shot, but unsure it would have been a vitals hit. I don't have any love for raccoons, but I also don't really want to just wound an animal.

    It was harassing his chickens.

Thought for next time? Range was close, less than 10 yards and certainly the biggest coon I've ever seen. Must have been a good 18-22lbs.

Solving coon problems with .22 subs works quickly and effectively. The CCI subs are fine but I find I typically use the Gemtech "orange box" subs for all my pest removal work.

With regard to the unsavory task of putting a coon down, remember that .22 ammo is cheap so don't be afraid to use as many shots are needed. As applied to your case, don't be afraid to shoot aggressively! I would have doubled tapped it center of mass and then approached for the final head shot if needed. Put some damage on it to slow/stop it and then finish the job at most a couple seconds later. Efficient, quiet (if suppressed), and effective!

Still thinking back to a rifle that won't cycle the quiets and "shed distance" with a pissed off coon. If it had cycled it I wouldn't have thought past "is anything not shootable behind the coon" and tore through the mag.

In hind sight, I still should have shot it and clubbed it down if it went for me.

Hmmmm.... you are right, that could be a recipe for an exciting story to tell your grandkids! -You are closing in, a rifle that fails after the first shot, and a big coon with plenty of life and agility left in it despite catching the first round well, charging you like an angry pitbull. That WOULD be bad! (but it would be an amazing story to post on mdshooters.com!!!)

Stay safe out there brother, shoot and punt it hard if needed I guess!

Volquartsen is now manufacturing a bolt for the 10/22 that will operate properly with the CCI Quiet and any round slower than 1000 fps. It's called the Firefly. It sells for somewhere around $200. I have tried to mill as much weight from a regular 10/22 bolt and I can't get it down to the 3 oz the Firefly is advertised to weigh. I've given up on my experimenting with a regular 10/22 bolt. I've rounded, polished, lightened everything that I can and I've not had any success.

It's going to hurt to buy a $200 bolt, but I'm going to do it. I've got about 5000 rounds of CCI Quiet ammo and I want to see this rifle shoot this ammo with my can. I'm hoping that it's as quiet as a pellet gun. My 10/22 with a regular bolt will operate properly using the CCI Suppressor ammo. It's quiet, but I want more (or less if you're talking about report).

    Interesting.

I am sorry to hear that you have been having reliability issues with the lower powered ammo. I guess it must be a common issue if Volq. has made a special bolt to remedy the issue.

I have been lucky so far I guess.

I built my main/primary pest removal tool -a suppressed 10/22 type SBR "pocket rifle" using a stainless Volq. receiver, Volq. "standard" bolt, and a Volq. trigger group. (Photo Below)

It is a straight up 10/22 design (albeit MUCH better quality parts than stock Ruger) and runs all manner of subs with zero reliability issues. I don't even clean it but maybe once every couple years and it gets shot a LOT for recreation also and is generally a filthy sludge fest in the receiver but it never fails to run perfectly.

Let us know how the new bolt turns out for you!

But does it run the CCI Quiet with a velocity of only 710 fps? My 10/22 with a can, easily shoots other subsonic ammo. But the slowest round I can shoot is about 900 fps. That's a big difference, something like 21-22% less velocity. The CCI Suppressor round works great, but the Quiet rounds just don't have enough energy to cycle the bolt enough to eject and feed another round consistently.

Yeah, the racoon seemed to be acting normal, but I didn't need the story to end with rabies shots, or it latching on my boys. I was in muck boots with no socks and mesh shorts with no boxer briefs. When your neighbor calls you 10 minutes after you got back from having dinner with him that he has a coon in his shed that was just nosing his chicken coop and he needs you and your 22 quiets you don't spend a lot of time putting on coon resistant clothing.

We haven't seen it since that night, but he makes sure to lockup his chickens right at sun down every night now and keeps his crossbow by the bed (a little quieter than his 20ga)

I told him, he needs a pair of double action 22lr revolvers and a box of 22 quiets.

Also just noticed, this is post #1776 for me. Go freedom.

When choosing ammo for situations like the above pay attention to the Velocity because if you want quiet you don't want to break the sound barrier (sonic boom) approx. 1100 FPS at sea level. And for effectiveness first look at the Energy the greater the energy the harder it hits, this is related to muzzle velocity and bullet weight because at the same velocity the heavier bullet will have more energy. Second factor in effectiveness is bullet design is it round nose, hollow point, segmented, large meplat, etc. the selection depending on the game. There is no single answer for all situations so check the manufacturers ballistic tables, CCI has a nice compare feature so you can look at different rounds side by side.

I use the CCI quiet out of my old Remington 510 targetmaster.. works great out to 25 yards. much less noise than a pellet rifle.

I bought a ratty old 510. Seller said it was external patina but was obviously pitting. I gambled the purchase, cleaned and obseved the bore is frosted. Bought a barrel with a good bore online but shot the rifle with the original barrel. It shoots!

I shot Fed 711 Target, Nosler Tac 22, CCI Standard Velocity , Quiet and Win 555 HV. Shot the first three listed into about an inch at 25 yards with the iron sights. Shot the 555 into a little less than that.

The long barrels on the earlier 5XX series keeps the noise down when shooting standard velocity and below. Mine have all be given away as they did not have dovetails and I couldn't see the front sight.
