I need to get some of those. Will motivate the kids.
    :lol2::lol2:

Colibri's are one load like that and CCI makes CB's that are similar, like 710fps, but they are short and 22long and use a 29gr LRN. I usually use a bolt action mag fed 22lr, so those are not an option, as they won't mag feed, though I have used the CB longs before they came out with the quiets in LR. (you just have to be very careful how you load them in the mags) ;)

Just how powerful are they? I know they are quite low velocity. Just second guessing myself now. Neighbor had a cornered coon that I only had a bead on for about 3 seconds before it hid and couldn't get to it. No real chance of a head shot so I didn't pull the trigger. Certainly could have gotten a body shot, but unsure it would have been a vitals hit. I don't have any love for raccoons, but I also don't really want to just wound an animal.

    It was harassing his chickens.

Thought for next time? Range was close, less than 10 yards and certainly the biggest coon I've ever seen. Must have been a good 18-22lbs.

Good for you for not taking a bad shot:thumbsup: Better to be patient and wait for a good shot. My wife used to hunt raccoons, using .22 shorts or CB's to get them out of trees. They can be tough animals. Excepting head shots, she says it could up to a dozen body hits before they would fall, depending on how fat and ornery they were. I suspect that your Quiets would be a little more effective, especially at that closer range...but you still probably wouldn't have gotten the clean kill you wanted.
I don't know what your neighborhood situation is like...maybe you don't have any other options.
If possible, I'd consider 12gauge birdshot for up close (to minimize collateral damage) and something like #4 buck for some distance. It will be loud, but should be immediately effective without the risk of ricochet into the next county.
    Or...a trap, then a Quiet headshot.:innocent0

The .22Quiet gives essentially the same power as a .22Short. ( Yes, back in the day people hunted with .22Shorts .)

I have shot coons, squirrels and ground hogs with 22 quiets out of a Rossi model 62 with a long barrel. The coons are taken behind the head inside of 30 yards and they die fast. For ground hogs and squirrels, a regular head shot will work at the same distance. I like Aquilla SSS better but the 60 grain bullet will not stabilize in all .22 rifles. It will in my 10/22 but is louder due to the short barrel and the bolt coming open even with me trying to hold it shut with my hand.

Neighborhood situation is a shotgun would be a bad idea, or a full power 22lr. The former could absolutely be used safely, but a 50/50 chance of the police getting called that time of night. Daytime might not get a call. Though most of the gunshots I hear during the day sound like they are coming from one of the farms nearby. Probably someone taking care of some groundhogs (it is maybe 1-3 shots every few days).

That and I figure a load of #6 bird shot if the bulk of it missed probably would have torn a fist sized hole through his shed at the short range it was (he was waiting around with is 20ga as a last resort). Where the sucker hid there was no easy or safe way to get it back out without risking hand-to-hand combat with a pissed off racoon.

Of course last night or I am sure tonight with all the people setting off fireworks we could have taken care of it with a .50BMG and no one would be the wiser.

If you're worried about sound but want the same as a standard 22LR, get a pellet riffle.

They shoot 1100-1200 and are not only less expensive to shoot will do the deed at hand.

I shoot standard 22LR through a compressed pistol all day and it sounds like a pellet gun so I don't sacrifice power. I only shoot subsonic compressed through my riffles so I don't get the sonic crack. But, if you don't have a suppressor, pellet riffle is the bees knees.

Shop around for the right pellet gun though...I bought a Gamo Hunter many years ago with the intent of being "stealthy." It was not...at all:sad20: Honestly, I think it's report is louder than the Quiets...and while it's got the velocity, it isn't pushing much mass at all.

Try to find some of this: CCI Suppressor 970 fps w/ 45grain hollowpoint.

I've shot it through my 10/22 and it cycled . Hard to find though.

Last Oaks show I attended, I bought 4 cases of the Suppressor ammo. I thought I bought out their inventory, but just before I left I noticed they had 2 more cases out. I didn't buy them. I should have.

There is another Oaks show in August. I'll probably go to that show. If that vendor is still there, they have such a great selection of ammo at a decent price, I always spend money at their tables.

Nice find! I'm using up all my stock of quiet and trying to replace it with that. I just find the drop too great on the quiet.

At what range are you suing the Quiets? They should be good for 50 yards.

BTW, what are you shooting them out of?

A Savage MkII and a 10/22. Probably 60ish yrds (its up at our cabin not sure of exact distance). In thinking about it I think the real issue is I have scope on Savage zeroed at 50 yrds with CCI mini-mags.

Yes, that's the issue. You're going to have to sight that scope for the quiets if you're going to use it. Those Quiet rounds are something like 40% slower.

There's no way they'll shoot where that scope is aimed.

I think you'd have issue with the CCI Suppressor rounds too.
