If you "Splat me" with a paintball when I'm burglarizing your home, or "sting me" with an AirSoft BB I'm gonna have a defense when the police arrive!
Why did you beat him senseless with the chair"
Because He shot me & I couldn't lift the Bloody piano!
    Seriously?

I'm reviving this to show there is a commercial company (Byrna) that provides air-gun pistols that fires solid and pepper filled 0.68 cal rubber balls. There are likely other companies, but if you search youtube you'll find a couple folks who test it out on each other.

I'm not sure I would want to use a pepper ball in the house, but I can see how it would temporarily disable someone (and those in the immediate vicinity) from aggression.

Again, if you're holding, pointing, or firing a gun-shaped object in a defensive situation....it should be a gun. The other party involved certainly has reason to believe it's a gun... so whether or not you want to create a lethal force scenario...you've created a lethal force scenario. The problem is that you've created this scenario with an object that likely will not stop a determined threat advancing on you, or a mildly lazy threat across the room with an actual gun.
