So I just picked up a STI 2011 frame kit from my favorite gunshop. I've always wanted a 2011, and said F it and took the leap. The only description I have for it is its a 5", ramped, with a wide dust cover. When I searched online, it looks like its one of these https://www.midwestgunworks.com/page/mgwi/prod/190-50020111-00

So now I'm looking to learn before I start buying parts / building. My only experience with 1911 pattern pistols is shooting them at the range, so I know i'm in for it . The purpose of this build is just to have a high quality 9mm 2011. I'm most likely never going to use it in comp, and I already carry a glock so that's out too.

    1. I don't know what parts I need - what is a good resource for the parts I need to build out this frame?

    2. I know there is a lot of hand fitting, and I'm not afraid of that. What 1911 specific tools will I need, and what will be good to have?

    3. Where is a good resource, either youtube video, dvd, or book, for building 1911 / 2011's and learning more about how they operate?

I'm sure I'll have more questions for this thread as I go along

Nix that shitty plastic grip first chance you get. As for parts, EGW makes most of what you'd need for parts, and either Jarvis or KKM for barrels. STAY THE F#$@ AWAY FROM WARWICK SLIDES. Their slides are grade A HEAPING garbage.

Is it more difficult fitting a threaded barrel to a 2011? A suppressed 2011 just makes me smile thinking about it

When it comes to bull barrels (assuming you go this route), no, it's no different than fitting a regular bull barrel. The methods for cutting the hood and lower lugs, along with doing barrel drop will all be the same.

is there a resource I can look at that describes the process for fitting the pieces?

You already got a link to MosinVirus for the how to. For parts:

Caspian slides are the ****, but be warned the the lead time is at least six months.

    Jarvis makes great barrels.

EGW, Cylinder & Slide, Nighthawk, Wilson, etc.

Dawson Precision is a great source for quality parts

    ExtremeShooters for the grip module.

You’ll want a lug cutter if you don’t have a machine shop (brownells).

You are taking a deep dive if you haven’t built a 1911 before because you are loosing a bit of “mil spec” prowess.

The aforementioned parts were used to build this since January when I got my frame. Pics are before final finishing/blending.

I can give you a proper parts list if you like, but I doubt you want exactly what I built (plus I did commander length 10mm)

    Thank you very much, gentlemen!

with regard to fitment of slide to frame, what tolerance should I aim for?

Same question when fitting the barrel

You want comp or range use but not carry right? Tight. Zero wobble or play. Fit with a mallet and fine lapping compound. Barrel fit should be even tighter/more precise and be careful on the breach face that you have full contact (same for the lugs); dye chem is your friend. If it was for carry I would suggest looser almost Sig P-220/6/9 loose. In which case heavier grit compound and keep working it after it breaks free.

Good sources have been listed. You can also acquire good value on this site, Thunder Mountain Custom:

    https://shop.1911parts.com/

Before you gnaw on the frame fitting the grip safety determine what you want in the grip.
The beavertails have about three basic profiles:
Ones to prevent hammer bite, not much of high hold - Clarks, Sigs
Ones allowing a little higher hold - Wilson, Smith & Alexander
High holds - Ed Brown (and similar copies), Wilson high hold, Nighthawk has a nice one, STI.

Along with the grip safety contour you will want to consider whether to high cut behind the trigger guard and if you do, how much.

Go out handle some 1911’s to get an idea of what appeals to you.
